I generally don't have a problem liking music. Some of my composer friends think that they need to have perfect taste that no one can find fault with, but I think as a composer, you have the right to not only listen to everything you want, but you should listen to all the music you can, no matter what genre. Then, if anyone gets on you for listening to music they don't like you get to whip out the "I'm a composer card" which generally stops the jeering and sneering.

That's pretty much what I do too. In fact, I pay special attention to listen to just about everything I can, though sadly this means I have a lot more music than time to listen to it.

And indeed, I honestly don't think I can be embarrassed listening to anything what so ever. It's sort of like my job/responsibility, if I'm going to be embarrassed it should be because I'm an ignorant about this or that other thing, though I work to correct precisely this.

There are some 80's and 90's hits I rather like, but not enough to really say I like even most of 80's and 90's music. I'd be almost embarrassed to say I like the stuff, though.

I love telling people I like Celtic music, especially Celtic rock. People give me the strangest looks when I mention flutes, fiddles, and bagpipes.

I also like some techno and electronica, but amn't embarrassed to admit to that. Yes, I just invented a new contraction.

GARANANG.... Won't you take me to... GARANANG ... FUNKY TOWN....

GARANANG.... Won't you take me to... GARANANG ... FUNKY TOWN!

(Air guitars)

I think this piece from Lipps Inc. is awesome

Embarrased to like? Some Portuguese music, considering my classical training. The only pop/rock/folk/wtv song I REALLY like is Simon & Garfunkel's The Sound of Silence. Pure magic.

I like John Williams. I get some strange looks for that, but god help me he's a weakness of mine.

I'm just wondering why everyone's hating on rock and popular music? There's a lot of crap out there, but there are a lot of incredibly musically talented and innovative musicians outside the concert hall.

Yes, "amn't" is how they say "aren't" here as well.

It makes a little sense...... I am not ---- not I are not.

I amn't, not I aren't.

In fact, a common expression over here is "amn't I not", which is pronounced like "amptanat", and means "aren't I?"

Note the double negative.

It's only really used as a substitute for 'I am not' here; "I amn't".

Very annoying seeing as we already have "I'm not" for that purpose

Over here they would more often say "amn't I", which makes sense, as "aren't I" is even more wrong. And "I'm not" doesn't work in that case, unless you want the incredibly drawn out "I'm not, am I?" or similar.

Danse Macabre - Saint-Saens!

I love that piece.

I'm just really curious.. why would you be embarrassed to admit liking that piece? It's a very solid composition. I don't see any reason for embarrassment. Is there some negative connotation to it?

I think it's because Saint-Saens is generally regarded as second rate.
