Morivou Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 February/March 2008 Monthly Competition OK, it's time!! LONG competition ahead. So, that means I want a lot of submissions. YAY!!! This time we are writing a DUET for two monophonic Instruments. SO DO IT!!! :whistling: The Rules: * You must write for two single staff instruments (not necessarily monophonic instruments... so two Violins, although not monophonic, would be acceptable.) * There may be NO keyboard instruments used. No pianos, organs, harpsichords, etc. * You MAY choose ANY TWO monophonic instruments, NOT LIMITED TO THE SAME FAMILY!!!!! (That will allow for better contrast and make a more interesting duet) * The piece must be normal notation, in other words the judge's notation software must be able to play it, please submit in midi format (you may also include a .pdf score for easy to read variations and score notes like dynamics and such.) * AMENDMENT TO THE ABOVE RULE: If in the case notation is not normal and cannot be played by a composing software (such as in between pitch notes, pitch bends, tongue flutter, String Harmonics (but I think this can be done)), you will be allowed to use it provided: You submit a PDF of the piece, an explanation of ANY non-standard notation techniques employed, and an MP3 of the piece. If this is not followed and you submit the piece and any of the judges cannot play it, we shall notify you and hopefully allow you to change it. In the event this happens after the deadline to submit the pieces, you will STILL be allowed to write the explanation of the devices used and submit an MP3 and PDF, but you will not be allowed to change the piece. That is ONLY if this is caught AFTER the deadline. * AMENDMENT TO THE ABOVE AMENDMENT: Any problem in providing a PDF and or a MP3 when using non-standard notation will be handled on a case-to-case basis. * The alternative is the submission of a compressed .mp3 file with link, however, you must provide a score so that we may see the notes. * Include information about piece in submission: Name of Piece and Instrumentation are required, however you may include anything else. * There may only be TWO staffs on each system. Remember, two solo instruments. * When you submit the composition, you must show what techniques you used. Tell us WHY you wrote for which family of instruments you did. Give us PROGRAM NOTES!! * You must compose an original piece. You may have help from people (obviously I cannot stop that), but please be honest, I like FAIR competitions. * DO NOT use a piece that is ALREADY WRITTEN (BY YOU OR SOMEBODY ELSE!! GRR) * ADDED RULE: You MAY have instrument changes if feasible for the player. Entry to CONTEST deadline is February 20th, 2008. Entry PIECE thread will be open by the 15th of March. This Competition will close on April 1, 2008. If this interests you, and you want to participate, please post below, and I will add you to the list of participants. James H. Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Does marimba count as monophonic? (please say yes, it's my favourite... you said percussion...) I do hereby sign up.
James H. Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 How about if I write for only one stave, like xylophone? Can it have stave changes, even if written on only one stave?
Dev Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 in it like spinach in...in itch like spinach... I hate spinach I'm participating.
Morivou Posted February 3, 2008 Author Posted February 3, 2008 Wow... ummm sure.... you can... but no spinach please.
Morivou Posted February 3, 2008 Author Posted February 3, 2008 If you wanna write for two vegetable instruments, be my guest. just make sure it is Midi compatible.
James H. Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 What is that supposed to mean? So... bowed vibraphone must be MIDI compatible? Upturned cymbal on timpani must be in GM? Come to think of it, there are no ophicleides in GM, so I can't write for them? I think MIDI has nothing to do with this... this is a composition event, not a GM event.

You have to submit in MIDI format (Which means midi compatible) unless you put in PDF and MP3. * The piece must be normal notation, in other words the judge's notation software must be able to play it, please submit in midi format (you may also include a .pdf score for easy to read variations and score notes like dynamics and such.)
ram Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 I will enter this contest. Please add my name to the list. Thanks!
rob1984 Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Yeh, I'll have a go. Are there any rules over length, number of movements etc?
Dev Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Nope, it's two staved. What if we delete one of the staves? Like, use only treble clef Marimba. That's not unreasonable, right?
Morivou Posted February 3, 2008 Author Posted February 3, 2008 countme in woot You are in. Can I play too? Yes, you may. I will enter this contest. Please add my name to the list. Thanks! I will. Yeh, I'll have a go.Are there any rules over length, number of movements etc? Actually, no, but if you want your piece graded well, I would show that you put a substantial amount of work into it. If it is 30 seconds, I am not even going to listen to the piece because I am sure that it could not have stated a theme or done anything with it in that short amount of time. So, be prepared for what you want to accomplish, but don't make it 4 hours... none of us judges want to listen to an entire symphony. lol. What if we delete one of the staves? Like, use only treble clef Marimba. That's not unreasonable, right? Ummm... I GUESS that is O.K., but you may ONLY have one staff open at a time. In other words, do not switch from treble staff xylophone and bass staff vibraphone to Grand Staff Marimba. See what I mean? (Cause you CAN do instrument changes)
virtualshock Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 OK I will enter this one, hopefully we will have more entries!
Morivou Posted February 3, 2008 Author Posted February 3, 2008 Alright! Everyone start working, that way we will have more entries!!
robinjessome Posted February 3, 2008 Posted February 3, 2008 Hell, I might actually do this one. Seems open-ended enough for me. Sign me up...no promises though. ;)
jujimufu Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 I would like to be judge again :) Plus, it would be really fun to review Robin's piece :P
