Nirvana69 Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Hm. How about Popularity- at least it's a word. famousness - Definitions from Dictionary.com *needs to find better things to do with his time* Quote
chopin Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I apologize for this problem. This issue has finally been resolved. If there are any further problems, please bring them to my attention. I decided to experiment with Google Adsense first, and if that doesn't work out, I will try the product lines from Amazon. Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Google's don't have the preeeety, eye-catching pictures. Quote
Morivou Posted February 5, 2008 Author Posted February 5, 2008 Actually, I really do! Because, without the pictures... I can surf the forums without taking notice to them. but, on a slower visit, when i am lethargically sulking through each new thread, I can stop and ponder the ads and maybe even go to a couple of sites. And, best of all, they aren't even the least bit annoying! Quote
Dirk Gently Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I hate google ads  those amazon ones aren't so bad....I could've lived with them Quote
Saiming Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 Well a few more ads cannot cause damage, after all we all are highly exposed to ads normally. It is just a matter of getting used too :) Quote
Romanticist Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 I hate google ads :angry:those amazon ones aren't so bad....I could've lived with them and so do I, they're irrelevent... Quote
James H. Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Has anybody else noticed a recent slowdown in thread loads due to the ads? I'm thinking it's just me and my connection being weak lately... I've had trouble being kicked off of my instant messenger clients for the past two days and getting timeouts loading ordinary pages, but lately I've been browsing threads and the first bit of the page well load until the first add, then my status bar will say "Loading from assoc.amazon.com" or something like that and the rest of the page won't load for 5-20 seconds when the amazon ads finally show up. Like I said, I think this is just a probably on my system, but I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this. Anyone? Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 The exact same thing has been happening to me, both at home and at school. Quote
Nigel Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 The ads are fine, the pictures are nice to look at. Gives the brownish colour scheme of YC some spark! Quote
Mike Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Any delay in page loading accompanied by the lack of appearance of anything below the ads signifies that Amazon is just being a bit slow. Or, perhaps, is down temporarily. There's nothing we can do it about it, really, save switching back to the old ads. I think chopin's still in a semi-experimental phase with the ads at the moment. James H. Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 I don't know if it would be possible, but if it were, we could have the ads be the last thing on the page to load, so that way they don't hold up the loading process of the rest of the page.... just in case Amazon has some downtime now and then. I DO like their ads better than Google's, by the way. They're pretty, pictureful, and match the forum skin. :) Quote
Mike Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 The order in which elements load depends upon their positioning on the page. It might be possible to have the ads load properly after a small delay, but this would require looking into and might even violate the terms of service. Generally, performance shouldn't be significantly impacted by ads. Sure, if the site hosting them is unreachable, there will be a serious problem, but that shouldn't happen very often at all. If it does keep happening, please let us know - it's useful information. Quote
