Chris
I have a piece in the key of E. So I use the key signature with C#, D#, F# and G#. But the piece starts slightly out of key, I have a melody which begins F-F#. I have scored it with a natural sign before the first F, and then a sharp sign before the next F. Is this right? Something is telling me that there is a more proper way to do it. Cheers.

montpellier
It depends on what happens next; what the Fnat is doing (is it on a weak beat); what harmony underlies, and the way you look on melodic line. Another way would be E#->F(#) not needing the # with the latter if f# is in the key signature. If the theme moves onto G# next, that would be a more elegant way.
