Hi,

Does anone know of somewhere where you can download films (of any length) with all the audio except the music. I have been composing alot of Film music recently but would really like to try it with a real film rather than an imaginary one.

I have looked for ages but cannot find anywhere.

Thanks,

Ben

"Castaway" with Tom Hanks doesn't have music until the very end.

Also, there are many artistic movies (as opposed to "mainstream" films, such as Hollywood productions etc) which don't have music at all, and you will find them mainly in film festivals (such as the Berlin film festival) or other film festivals, in cities near you etc. So, you could take one of these films and add music to it. Note that you should always take the permission of the copyright holder of the movie, otherwise it is illegal (which is why you probably won't find a movie which originally has music without the soundtrack if you're not the person writing/arranging the music for it).

No country for old men has a total of 16 minutes of music (including the credits.) It's one that comes to mind.

You can also try to rip a movie and only get the video.

It helps to have the audio, though. Helps see the big picture and all, seeing how movie music interacts and is a part of movies. Because if you want to write really good movie music that's how it has to be. It can't be nothing, neither can it be everything, but it must blend with the whole film. Just music and video makes the music seem more programmatic rather than incidental, unless within the context of the movie it makes sense, of course. Movie music, I think, is the teamwork version of composing, of making art. So write for already made scenes without music, ask around for whomever's making movies and write for them, just write with movies! Or at least for them

 whew *finishes little speech about movie music*

, mmm, a healthy dose of ridiculousness always soothes me :P. Also I used the term "movie music" almost religiously :ermm:.
