For wind players, it is never acceptable to use 8va/8vb markings. If the part looks like bad with two different parts on it... use two separate parts.

... I wouldn't say never ..... flute and piccolo use 8va quite a bit, and tuba occasionally needs an 8vb below say... E1 or so. I would say their use is warranted every once in a blue moon.

Do they? Can't recall ever seeing it, and aren't they supposed to be used to reading a million ledger lines anyway?
