James H. Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 *boink* For those interested, I compiled what I think are the best smilies from the site we've been drawing from, here is my compilation: J4's Collection of Emoticons Simply copy the url of the smiley image and paste it into an img tag here in a post. I think I have more than enough to keep everybody happy. Go ahead and bookmark the page for reference if you like it. If not, just disregard it entirely. If Mike would like to add any of the ones on the page, it is of course his choice, but I like YC having a relatively small collection of smilies. Rock on. Quote
bob stole my cookie Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 The only two of those I really like are the bowing one in the "agreement" section and the first one waving a white flag in the "signs" section. I think a surrendering emote would be genius! Quote
James H. Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 How about this in replacement for my own iffy? It could also be :-/ or :-\ or just :/ or :\ Another... :patty: ? Hey, we have a santa one, we should have others too. *updates own emotes page* J4's Collection of Emoticons *ground shakes* P.S. I think our list of smilies needs to be reorganised to accommodate the new additions in a more logical manner. They are kinda strewn about in random order, methinks. Quote
Mike Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 I happen to like your "iffy" more than the one above, but I guess if people disagree with that sentiment then it could be replaced. Kind of hard to democratise on small issues like this. The smilies are in fact loosely ordered in that common ones precede the more eclectic - what kind of ordering did you have in mind? Quote
James H. Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 http://j4.byethost9.com/emotes2.htm How's that? I think it's more visually appealing. Especially for the Shoutbox. Only for the ones after our dear Smithy. The rest must stay in the same place, we're too used to having them there, it would be annoying to change THEM. But these others are quite new. (edit: newly added ones, Veryunsure and Longface, should both go after Forlorn in this scheme) [edit] Working on a  smilie. What do you think? Quote
James H. Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Do you REALLY need one that badly? If you REALLY ABSOLUTELY do I could sacrifice an hour or two and create an animated one that actually fits our smiley set. (the one you provided would never be accepted, we only use a single style of emoticon) Quote
Daniel Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Facepalm would be super-useful. Btw: It's St. Paddy, not St. Patty!! Flipping Americans. :-p Quote
Flint Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 How about this one... we can call it "atonality" (culled from my profile...) Quote
Tokkemon Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 How about this one... we can call it "atonality" (culled from my profile...) YES!!! :w00t: Quote
Mike Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 It would look better if sized down and anti-aliased. I'm not great with animated GIFs...anyone care to help out? Quote
Laogeodritt Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 @Mike:The GIF format is an indexed image format that has a (maximum) 255-colour index; that is to say, any GIF file can have a maximum of 255 unique colours, where a colour is a unique (r,g,b) combination. Furthermore, transparency is 1-bit (and indexed!); that is to say, a pixel is either transparent or not transparent. To antialias it would require adding a solid, rather than transparent, background to the animation, and would probably increase dithering since it would require several colours in the index. Technical difficulty aside, it looks fine to me. Recall that it's a sprite, which is usually pixel work and not antialiased (I dare say the early gaming systems and computers couldn't do transparency anyway...). This one's a good one, actually - it's pretty high resolution (certainly not modelled after NES sprites!) and rather detailed and subtle. Quote
Berlioz Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I think it's custom. Not only does it blend well with the forum colours, but the fact that it is pixelated is precisely what makes it awesome. It can't really be sized down, I've tried with GIF editors and it just becomes too "foggy" or disproportionate. Quote
Mike Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 My bad - you're absolutely right, Laogeodritt. I had failed to consider transparency. I do think downsizing wouldn't hurt, though. Some quality loss would be incurred, but could perhaps be mitigated by temporarily seguing into RGB mode and performed an anti-alised resize, then going back to indexed when saving. I just did this myself, it seems to look acceptable. You know it's Bowser, at the very least. I'll try to do facepalm when I have more time... Quote
Berlioz Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Awww... Mike. Why isn't the size acceptable? :( Quote
Mike Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Oh yeah, it is in the arsenal now (boom!), just forgot to mention here. I'm having second thoughts about Bowser. Why should he get to become a smiley? Why not also Mario, Peach, Sonic, Snorlax etc.? Just doesn't seem to have any specific application to the site, general conversation or music. Quote
robinjessome Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Serious suggestion: I could use this guy a lot. :dunno: ?? Quote
Mike Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Added. Not sure what you'd want to use it for though... :dunno: Quote
Anders Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 What does it portray? A guy/gal that plugs their ears, or someone with cranks jammed up their ears? edit: oh i see it now, nevermind :whistling: Quote
robinjessome Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 In the shoutbox, and perhaps here too: (TEST :facepalm  ) the "facepalm" smiley only works with ":one" ":" thingy... ":not2:" like all the others. If that makes any sense. Quote
robinjessome Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Oops, typo. Fixed now. :P I'm glad you managed to decipher my post... Quote
