Chris Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 Hey, I'm curious to know if anyone could help me decide whether or not I should pursue formal music education or not, and where would be the best place to do it. I've been thinking about it for a while, as I really love music, and am falling in love with composing. I'm not so interested in getting a qualification, as I am in just being educated musically, and having time to work on composition. The thing I am really interested in learning is orchestration, all of the instruments and everything about them. I already got a lot out of the masterclasses on this forum, and would like to study that kind of thing on a much deeper level. I wouldn't mind learning some music theory as well, it can't do any harm I guess. I'm particularly interested in learning about harmony, and also this thing called counterpoint that I've heard so much about but still don't even know what it is. What else do these places teach? I would want to study in a relaxed, easy going environment, that allows a lot of room to be creative. Music education has always seemed really stuck up to me, full of ego and cliques etc. I would hate to end up somewhere like that. What kind of criteria do music courses look for in a potential student? Is it necessary to have past music qualifications? Thanks, Chris. Quote
