Welcome!

THIS is where the music for the competition will be sent in! I ask that the participants please submit the following before March 30th:

TURN IN EVERYTHING ON THIS LIST!!!!

1. A Midi file of the piece.

2. An MP3 'IF POSSIBLE/NECESSARY'*

3. A Score in .PDF, gif, jpeg, or any type of file that is suitable to ANY computer without extra software needed (excluding Adobe).*

*An MP3 can be used if necessary desired effects are wanted to be heard better that a Midi cannot.

*A score is needed for the purpose of Judging

*If an MP3 is put in, no Midi is needed, but a visual score is still necessary!

Judging shall be commenced on this scale:

(There will be 5 topics for each of the four judges, they will each give a score on 1-5 of each of these topics... THEN they will add the numbers up and that is the score from that judge. The cumulative score (each Judge score out of 25, added is out of 100) out of 100 is the final score. The reason I am doing it this way is to prevent favorites, and to prevent weaknesses in the composer's style that cannot be helped, such as lack of theory training but great music.)

Rubric:

1. Form (1-5)

2. Development (1-5)

3. Notation (1-5)

4. Compliance with the Rules (1-5)

5. Instrumentation (1-5)

(These five points from NOW ON, will be the judges own rubric within the guidelines of the five points. haha!)

JUDGES WILL SEND ADVICE BY PM AS TO MAKE IT MORE PERSONAL!!!

Here it is a duet for flute and cello.

Funny you choose flute and cello, I've done just exactly the same:D. I hope judges won't get bored of this, but on the other hand we will have a good contrast...

I'll submit as soon as I've got any time.

It's great we've got a submission already :)

I'd like to ask from the contestants (and everyone else too) to refrain from posting irrelevant comments here, other than the submissions themselves, to make it easier for us judges to get the pieces :)

For any other comments, just use the official competition thread (not the submission thread).

Thanks in advance (don't bother replying to this comment saying that you will not comment, because you will have already done so :P )

Sorry about that...

So here's my submission:

As I said it's also a piece for flute and violoncello I called "Alone in the moonlight".

Alrighty #3

Over this spring break I visited Zion national park (USA),

I sketched a few ideas while I was there.

This duet is for 2 Ocarinas specificaly 2 mountain ocarinas becuase I wanted a "native" feel:

Ocarina

I based this piece off of "Weeping rock" It is facinating standing near it and having water drip down all around you.

Picture:

SANY0016_thumb.jpg(sorry if its huge)

the piece is in a A-B-A form, with the A being a little more sad and the B a little joyfull.

Here is the mp3:Box.net - Free Online File Storage, Internet File Sharing, Online Storage, Access Documents & Files Anywhere, Backup Data, Send Files

I recorded it and added a bunch of reverb, The recording has a rather smoothly rough sound, not excatly how I wanted it but its the best I could do :) I also added a improvised rain stick part, so there is more than 2 voices, If I dont get a chance to get rid of it, ignore it! :P

or just listen to the midi

cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here we go:

It's called Zodiac for no reason at all. It's Marimba (ONE STAFF!) and french horn, and it's supposed to sound as odd as the instrumentation. The marimba player utilizes 4-mallet technique (although there is never an instance of more than 3 notes played at once) to provide odd, dissonant harmonies at the outset and later to provide a flowing melodic line. While neither part can be considered able to stand alone, the instruments trade off "melodic" and "accompanying" lines. As a whole, the peice starts off somewhat directionless, then slowly gains its footing up until the point where the key changes, where a more (but still not completely) traditional duet style begins.

The piece is really short, but oh well - that's how it goes I guess.

Here is my entry for the march 2008 competition.

It is a baroque-style piece based on the principle of invertible counterpoint. It has 2 themes that can be combined upside down.

The first theme is developped through a passacaglia and appears as an ostinato. Seven variations on this theme are made, with the rythm increasing progressively.

The second theme is developped through a fugue. Since we have only 2 voices, various ranges of the instruments are used to emulate 4 entries of the subject. The fugue is of course a 2-voice one.

At the end of the fugue, to conclude the piece, the 2 themes join together for the final climax whilst the rythm is calmed down.

You will note that there is no dynamics indication in the score, on purpose. In the traditional baroque style, it is up to the performers to choose whichever dynamics they feel appropriate.

I have included a MIDI, a PDF and an MP3 realization of the piece. However, I use free software on Linux and therefore the MIDI does not contain the notes for the ornements (pralls, trills, etc...), as LilyPond (the notational software I use) does not generate them. You will find all the files here.

Happy listening and judging.
