jujimufu Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 I meant, whoever played clusters on the organ *back then* would be hanged. I doubt anyone would be hanged nowadays for anything... Well, apart from Mexico >_> And yeah, Messiaen improvised greatly on the organ. But he didn't go beyond clusters... You may say Ligeti went beyond clusters in organ writing, but not Messiaen.. Hm... maybe you should use the word "canon" in the same way that the rest of the world uses it? Canon: Anatomy of (for the "contemporary canon" that you don't understand, here are some examples: Canon (music) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) I was never talking about canon as the musical style or form, lol~ I meant it as what's acceptable, etc etc. And Messiaen did do a lot of out-there stuff on organ, and Ligeti is an entirely different thing. I guess I should define what is "beyond clusters" anyways. It means extending composition techniques to include clusters and develop them in lots of different ways, etc etc. Not just Cowell style~ (Ex. "Les mains de l'abime" from Livre d'Orgue) Also, I meant using a lot of other modern techniques and not just clusters. Quote

jujimufu Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Well, could you at least compromise with the rest of the musical community and use the already existing technical terms with the same meaning as the rest of us for the sake of communication? Canon is a very specific term in music, and so are cluster chords. And when you mean things, please say them as well. EDIT: robin: I know what "canon" literally means, I am greek :P But in a musical context, the word "canon" is not used in this way. Quote
SSC Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 If you entirely ignore what else I'm saying BESIDES the word canon, I guess I can see where the misinterpretation is... But uh. Quote
echurchill Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 \What better way to honor the "old masters" than to follow the tradition of innovation? After all, that is why we remember ... Bach instead of Buxtehude. Buxtehude is my hero, and I personally feel his music is more innovative than Bach's. But, of course, we should listen to them both and appreciate them both for their respective strengths. Aside from that, I do like the idea of innovating... or at least drawing upon the resources of all styles to create something new and personal and interesting. Quote
