Wendell.R.F.93 Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 What do you guys think of what Weird Al Y. does? He is creative in his own way, painting an image from his imagination out of famaliar songs , which of course the originals were better in their own respects. Weird Al - Amish Paradise Coolio's - Gangster paradise Original - Pasttime paradise by Stevie Wonder Weird Al- Like A Surgeon Original - Like A Virgin Weird Al- Eat it MJ's - Beat it Weird Al- White and Nerdy, wasn't meant to contain any racisim but simply just to be a funny song. Chamillionaire's - Ridin' Dirty, I'm personally not a big fan of rap music, but rap does take tallent to produce... no matter how... degraded some of it may be to females -.- Weird Al - Canadian Idiot , not meant to insult Canadians but to be funny in a sense. Original - American Idiot, same explaiination from canadian idiot. Weird Al - Ebay Can't remember the group or the original song. Those are just a few example's that I can think off the top of my mind. What are your opinions on people making their own songs/pieces from an original work of art? Another Example. Fatal Fantasy - The epic song that at the time was most recognized from some of the I Am Legend trailers, now with so many on the internet I don't know what ones are the originals and what are fanmade. Youtube link as follows : YouTube - Music Junkies-Fatal Fantasy Requiem for a Dream [ Two Towers Arrangement of Lux Aeterna, essentially the same song] YouTube - Lord of the Rings - Requiem for a Dream The Two Towers It wouldn't suprise me if the composer of Fatal Fantasy got alot of his ideas from requiem for a dream . Your opinions please >:] Quote
jujimufu Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 Weird Al is just having a great time making parodies of songs (and funny songs of his own, of course). What's so "discussive" about it? :P He's not trying to make the originals better, he's just trying to make people laugh out of something so common and ordinary. Which I find pretty cool (his "The Saga Begins" is incredible). You might also want to check Stephen Lynch :D Quote
Wendell.R.F.93 Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 Well I put this up because I've seen alot of people say he "steals" other people songs and makes them terrible :P I don't think thats the case but half the people I meet say that -.- Quote

And that includes me. We're all dumb but think we have the world on a string, we'll come into our own soon enough. Quote

Anyways, I think Weird Al is pretty fun to listen to. And, uh, I don't see anything wrong about making stuff based on other people's stuff~ It can be a blast to do, look at Berio's Symphony, with the Mahler quotes and stuff. So yea, that. Quote
Mark Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 I like his songs, always god for a laugh :) I suggest renaming your thread, 'Discussion Thread' is as descriptive as... Dammit - if I can't come up with witty and amusing similes anymore I know I need sleep. Quote
P.J. Meiser Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 Weird Al is pretty sweet. His parodies kinda ruin the original songs, especially the ones that aren't very good in the first place. My sister's choir did "Do I Make You Proud" at their concert and I was almost cracking up thinking about Al's lyrics. Quote
