We can compile a large list of composers, instruments, musical pieces (by composer), or any sort of musical term or name, and each forum member can place up to 20 tokens (one per item) at the side of the item. Then each item will be weighted according to the total amount of tokens accounting for it, and the most weighted item will be placed at the top of the list, etc. It will be like a giant poll for musical terms and names.

Members will be allowed to suggest (or add) new items to The Easy List. Have you ever been to Best Stuff? It's kind of like that, but only having to do with musical terms and names. There will even be a picture of the item. (example: a picture of Gustav Mahler for "Mahler," or a picture of a triangle for "the triangle.")

It could be a kind of "Whats hot, whats not? list" created from some sort of internet/html code. Also members can take their own tokens on or off units at any time and place them onto any other of the items.

We can name it something different than "The Easy List" but thats the general idea of it, that it will be extremely easy for everyone to see what people in the forums are currently in to, or what "the most popular thing" in music is right now, all according to our own members!

And perhaps there will be too many items on the list and not enough member opinions to weigh them. Well, then we can give members more tokens as more items are added.

-------------------------

And this list idea may be too complex. Perhaps we just want a simpler list of only "musical pieces." That could be done even more easily.

What do you guys think of the idea? The list and its triggers could be placed in a little window near the top of the page.

So, in other words, a system to gauge the popularity of musical commodities through user votes? Somewhat like Digg? Could be interesting, however...

It could be a kind of "Whats hot, whats not? list" created from some sort of internet/html code.

Any idea who'd be responsible for that? ;)

The 2008 Survey Analysis already commits me to creating a Competitions system at some point during the summer, along with a bunch of other things (which others can ostensibly help out on). If people were to voice significant support for your idea, I could see priorities being shaken up, but at the moment I'd like to keep things as simple as possible.

What's the point? I see no benefit that could come from this that would outweigh the massive amount of time and energy that it would take to create/maintain.

I tend to agree with Mark. It might be mildly interesting for a little while...but I don't think it'd be worth the effort.

Perhaps (with the application of the new software/social networking aspect) we could have have a spot on our profiles for 'that type of thing' - a list of (in their opinion) "what people in the forums are currently in to, or what 'the most popular thing' in music is right now..." Perhaps integrating THAT into a pared-down, global list.

Still sounds pretty complicated.

:hmmm:

I dunno - I tend towards the idea of voicing my opinion...not amalgamating my opinions into a mishmash from across the forum.
