Voce
What are your favorite violin concertos? My favorite 5 Bartok's 2nd- Beautiful lyricism and incredible orchestration, typical of Bartok's pieces. Shostakovich's 1st- Again, great orchestration, but in Shostakovich's language and with his trademarks. Stravinsky's- The two arias are very expressive, and the violin is often working with the orchestra Berg's- A very powerful piece, combining a tone row with elements of tonality. Prokofiev's 1st- Expressive in the first movement, rhythmic and light in the second, and mischevious in the third

He intentionally switched the typical roles of the 2nd and 3rd...I'll also add Mendelssohn, Barber, and Korngold...I've been getting into Bartok 1 and Szymanowski's as of late

I was at a live performance of it, good piece. I haven't heard much of Barber's except for little bits of it.
goodridge_winners
i love szymanowskis, voce! But my fav's are Bruch's in G minor, and Tchaikovsky's in whatever key that is in. I LOVE THEM. Mainly because I havent heard many violin concertos (being a pianist more interested in his own genre), and also, I do love atonality and works of stravinsky/bartok etc. but I can listen to the two choices i made ALL DAY. I love them.

Violist
I'll be the first to say Sibelius' is my favorite. Why? It's just so mind-blowingly awesome, that's why!

JSK
Beethoven, Sibelius, Glazunov, Khachaturian. I also like the Barber and frankly am a little sick of the Mendelssohn and the Bruch.
gianluca
I love the Berg concerto and Ligeti's incredible violin concerto is another favorite of mine. Elliott Carter has also written a very fine violin concerto, which deserves to be played more often.
