Like the other thread, i just want to know who many of you are Baroque or Classical composers. and what you think of it.

This is not a discussion thread, so to you other composers, dont even bother to make any remarks, i dont what this to be another war zone!

Discuss Baroque and classical music only :)

I compose some Classical- and Baroque-type music, but most of what I do uses newer (read: from within the past two hundred years) techniques and styles. I am really interested in hearing Baroque textures and harmonies with some unresolved, harsh dissonances or things of that nature. You know, mixing the old with the new.

And yeah, based on the fact that time didn't stop after 1800, I don't see how this thread will never touch on the territories on newer music.

As you know...

I am HEAVILY influenced by Beethoven... but I really have my own style. So.. yeah, I guess you could say that I am a late-classical composer. I don't use many of the ornaments and I very sparingly use passing tones/neighboring tones... but I am sure to improve on that.

One thing that signals a piece as being classical: a running, repeated eigth note line... I don't why, but I don't really notice this in pieces of other eras. (Like Beethoven sonata 1, mozart divertimientos... etc.)

It's funny, but I always think of my music as being "baroque" in inspiration.

Maybe you would find it too modern for that description. However, the structural elements are there.

By the way, ALL threads on this forum are open to "discussion". So just saying that this thread isn't for discussion is, well, pretty much an invitation and a guarantee that there WILL be discussion.

Discussion thread!

Oh oh oh

So, yeah, this is a thread for the people who are stuck 200 years ago? That's kewl! I wish I was like you... but hey, unfortunately I kind of like all this dissonance. So sad...

Nice QcC that you use some baroque influence in you music, i think many do

The thing is, I didn't stop my musical evolution 300 years ago. There may be baroque processes in my music, but I don't limit myself to the harmony of that period.

Hmm... I've composed many baroque style stuff in my life! I consider all of them to be exercises, but this certainly has not stoped me from liking them, and keeping a handful in Finale files to listen occasionally!

SimenN, what will you do, once you find out who amongs us are baroque or Classical composers? Just wondering...

Wasn't there a thread like this somewhere else?

Yeah, count me in. I've been doing the Classical-Revival thing all my life, and I'm a member of a society of contemporary Baroque composers.

I want to comment on what Juji said sooooo badly...but I'll restrain myself.

I'm sorry if I provoked you J. Lee Graham :X

It's just that, what do all those people saying that modern and contemporary music sucks, or go as far as saying that it's not even music say about the people who actually like this kind of music?

And it would be a logical fallacy to say that Baroque music is better/more artistic/correct/the way to go merely because there are more people who like baroque and classical music than modern and contemporary.

Why do this Juji? :( Again the same issue?

Are we not tired of the same old questions? This is a thread for people who love/write baroque/classical music. Let it me...

You seriously bother me, kid. Too much hubris. By the way, are you aware that there is a difference between understanding functional dissonance and misunderstanding consonance?

Learn the rules before breaking them, and then only do it tastefully. Not many people think that throwing inanely random dissonances everywhere is surprising or clever anymore, just nerdy and common. That isn't to say it can't be done well, but definitely not without a natural (i.e. classical) taste to back it up.

Please stop disrespecting those who draw inspiration from the classical masters and styles simply because you don't find it necessary to properly examine or acquire the subtle devices used in those eras.

It is a lot easier to hide deficiency under a veil of dissonance.

Which society is that?

Simon, I am currently writing a very baroque concerto for two oboes, English horn and strings. I will share it with you when I am finished.

Why not the rest of the community, please? :)

And btw, how old are you? And why is this "kid" thrown around like it's some kind of an insult? I mean hasn't eveyrbody been younger before?:w00t:

Kid was pretty harmless compared to the other words I *wanted* to use. I'm 27.

I've observed too much defamation on this website to post my own work here, so I only share my work with select members privately, though if you're genuinely interested, I can add you to that list. I'm really not ashamed of my work, but I do have a problem with subjecting it to the egotistical invective on here and having that invective permanently attached to my work without any ability to control the content.

I use a "business name" on here, so you won't find any of my music by Googling JSP either. Just send me a private message.
