SimenN Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 YouTube - John Cage "4'33" IS THIS ART? COMPOSING ?
SimenN Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 You realy need to be a great preformer to play this piece, i doubt any other orchestra could play this, its just to hard. They play supersonic music, tuned to high for the human ear, great experince of music!
SimenN Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 Great art, you have to study at least 30 years to do a piece like this!
Daniel Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Grow up. It may not be music (to me) but there's an obvious philosophical intent. You're also not one to talk about 30 years of study of music.
SimenN Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 No realy , this is insane, this is no composition, this is not music, this is silence, when you are home at night before you sleep, the same silence, he did not produce anything. The silence is allways there, and the crows applaud him and he get famous for a piece with no lyric, no music, not even a single note, this is wild!
punkitititi Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 I think that in this piece there is the fullfillment of how human being can be weird.... i think it is more of a psycological experiment than simple art or anything else. you see a big orchestra sitting there, a conductor, all the crew...all them payed, then the crowd, all there sitting quiet and listening to nothing, or better, to just the noyses made by some that cough, some that sneeze....maybe ur neighbout let out a really advanced creation, high class as for a fugue........of gas :p but yeah, you see maybe 300 ppl sitting there, listening to nothing, just being quiet, and they payed for it! how fun we are sometimes! and how weird ppl can be!! humans are amazing sometimes! great acheivements with nothing..... better than this? nothing esle in this world! and hey...look at it in this way.... everybody can perform it, and everybody can be a great performer for a day!!! YAYYYYYYYYYYYY LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE HIM LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOUUUU LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
SimenN Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 You're also not one to talk about 30 years of study of music. what do you mean by that Daniel?
SimenN Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 i totaly agree with you punkititi you got my 150% support!
cygnusdei Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 You will never know the true intention of a composer. For all we know, Cage might be laughing at us for playing along.
Voce Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 In that piece, Cage was doing something new, which is applauded in most musical fields. He did something people hadn't done like that before, and advanced the ideas of avant-garde music, even if there was no performed music in the piece. Remember that in making 4'33", Cage meant to have people focus on the sounds that were happening during the time the piece was being "performed." To suggest that people should just kind of "stop and smell the roses," appreciate real-life sounds, that kind of thing, I think that really is art.
Daniel Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 You're also not one to talk about 30 years of study of music. what do you mean by that Daniel? I mean that your criticising composers who have much training (and about whom you know next to nothing - your self-imposed ignorance of 20th c. music has been shown before) carries no weight. Worry about fixing the errors in your own music before laying into things you don't understand. I hate Cage by the way, but it is clearly art.
SimenN Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 Yes, i think he do, intention, this is insane! This i why i stick to the old!
SimenN Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 Mabye i should do pieces like this daniel? then i cant make a error can i?
Voce Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Mabye i should do pieces like this daniel? then i cant make a error can i? All you want to do is argue. You're not really looking for an answer, are you?
SimenN Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 Im looking for a answer yes, do you call this a composition voce?
Voce Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Im looking for a answer yes, do you call this a composition voce? I already gave my opinion. Top of the page.

punkitititi Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 hey, have ever john cage said anything about this piece? why he did it...what was in his mind, and if it was in agreeing with what critics said and ppl thought about it? i mean...sometimes u write a piece just to write music u like to hear, and then somebody sees in it things that maybe you never thought about....so, hope i made the question clear.... :)
Voce Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 Ohh!, well i dont :) Obviously. That's why I said, you need to open your mind. 300 and 400 year old music is 300 and 400 years old. There's been centuries of musical development and centuries of discussion on what "music" really is. Music has progressed since the times of Bach, and Palestrina before him. While I acknowledge the greatness of the old masters, I also realize that good things have happened to music since then. Just check out some more recent music, that's all I'm saying.
SimenN Posted April 24, 2008 Author Posted April 24, 2008 yes this concerto or what ever it is, is the proof of the good progression! silence!
Voce Posted April 24, 2008 Posted April 24, 2008 yes this concerto or what ever it is, is the proof of the good progression! silence! Exactly. That really is progression, whther you think it is or not. I personally don't like Cage's pieces, but I know that what he did was art nonetheless. You have to open yourself to new things to mature musically.
