healey.cj Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Hey, I'm currently writing a piece for solo flute but I'm having a lot of difficulty writing a continuous piece for 5 minutes. So far I've got one minute (1:10 to be precise) and now I can't seem to write anything that 'fits' afterwards. Nothing I do seems quite right and I've got to have the other 4 minutes written by Tuesday. So if you have any suggestions on how to get past this blockage or any critic on the first 1 minutes worth then please go ahead. I'm fine with brutal criticism as long as it is constructive. ie. Don't tell me it is crap unless you can tell me how and why. lol Also, you'll notice there is a lot of material after the first minutes worth. That was the first version of the piece but it had too many ideas and just seemed to wander so I started working more on variation of the first idea. You can just ignore it if you want. So... ANYTHING structural, compositional, or simply ideas you want to suggest please do. I really need to get this done and it is driving me mental. Thankyou! Chris :-) Flute 1.MUS Flute 1.MID Quote
Ananth Balijepalli Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 It seems like your first minute flowed pretty well, but then after that, it became quite random because of the lack of a tonal center because of the large spaces between phrases. I thought the piece was over between each one. I would suggest changing the notes.. maybe lower. You could also take your theme and reverse it around. You could also just add a fast section in which the theme is played with background notes played at least a fifth below the melodic line (in sixteenths maybe) Quote

Lol Don't forget that the actual piece so far ends at 1:10. The rest is just 'scraps' of ideas or left overs from the original. The gaps are there because I just inserted blank measures in case I wanted to 'work around' any of the scraps. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. Quote
healey.cj Posted April 27, 2008 Author Posted April 27, 2008 Well thanks for ALL the support everyone *cough cough* Anyway, I've added another section to the piece. A 'B' Section if you will. However, the piece needs to total 5 minutes and even with a repeat of the A section, I will be short 1:30 ish So where do you think I could add more development to the material? THANK YOU!
