jujimufu Posted September 7, 2008 Author Posted September 7, 2008 I'm a judge.. and I won't give reviews.. I'll pick a winner like they do in real score calls... Sadly, you've missed the whole point of monthly competitions in YC.
Mitchell Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 Let's see... When I listened a while ago... someone was really obvious to me...The winner, IMO is, Mitchell. Wooot. Sweet. Does that mean I win?
James H. Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 I for one am a fan of the reviews, Corbin. I think they are vital for these competitions. So what, you write a piece, get more points than other people, win, and go brag about it. What do you get out of that? I don't think that's how it should be. We want to know WHY we got the scores we did. Did the judges find some things weak, and other things strong? We wouldn't really know what they are referring to in scores without at least a short commentary. Even when performing an audition or exam piece in front of a council of judges, they often give feedback and not just scores. Point is, I want to learn from these competitions. We all have a common goal or theme to adhere to, a deadline to write for, and we expect to learn something from our finished project that we alone cannot see from our points of view. And what you said... you'd be happy to discuss some points in PM, and stuff. That's all nice, but prone to lead to arguments between the judge and contestant, I think. In saying what your saying, Juji's right. You seem to miss the point here. And Juji, I apologize if I (and of course other people) have come off as unforgiving of you simply because you have a real life. I think people were just getting testy because you didn't come in here and maybe leave a note saying "I don't have the time anymore for this." or something short, simple, sweet, and to the point. I respect that your time could be best vested elsewhere. That's not to say that I'd be displeased that I don't receive a nice handy review... your reviews were exquisite. Fine, and detailed, and I learned a lot from the last one. But again, sorry if we've all been scallopes about this.
James H. Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 Alright, I won't complain. Let's see how this turns out.
Dirk Gently Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 So this competition, instead of being finished, simply led to a new one :w00t:! I sure hope Corbin's is more effectively done :ermm: Edit: Eww, a national anthem solo flute piece! How boring!

Dirk Gently Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Well.. all of the options were pretty boring... but it seems easy enough to do. Imagine what you could do with it? Eh, it doesn't sound appealing to me. A piece for solo flute sounds great, but one based off a national anthem...I'd have to either write in a more traditional style, or else transform the anthem into a more modern style...Either way doesn't sound appealing to me. Which is fine, I just won't do the competition. It's not like it pays anything, and I have enough work as it is :P. Still, solo pieces are easier to write (for me, at least) :ermm:...
