hajjuxl Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 HI, I want to become a professional music producer but however I want to make sure that I get a professional training under a good school or college... Can anyone tell me which are the best Colleges/Universities that can teach to become a music producer??? I am talking about a 'Music Producer' who is able and trained enough to produce and compose music for movies, music albums, advertisements etc. Also I would like to excel in western classical and pop music. Thanx in Advance!! Quote
Stevemc90 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 i'm attending the Hartt School for Music Production and Technology in the fall...seems like a great program, they take ten-ish students a year i think...and of course Hartt strong classical foundation (as well as jazz), Quote
nikolas Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Before we go on in this discussion, can you define what is a "music producer" in your mind? Quote

nikolas Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Very briefly cause I don't have time right now. 1. "best" is not a valid term anywhere. There's room for all of us! (hehe... how did THAT sound?) 2. A music producer, produces records and that's all he does. He doens't (regularly) compose, or orchestrate. He is the eyes and the ears of the creator/composer to the audience. That's all. Change the term. 3. ads, films, computer games, western classical music and pop music are all very very different. You don't have to pick, but you do have to make the choice at some point. 4. Where are you? Would you be willing to move to Paris? London? La? NY? How old are you? What have you writen so far? What are your influences? Without this information it's impossible to reply. I mean there: julliard. A perfect school, famed and all. Go there! Is it helpful at all as a reply? Film music is not "special" branch of composing in general. ?Yes you need some further skills, yes, a career is different than the one of concert hall music, but in the end, in the bottom line, you need ot be able to compose... So... My very vague advice to what you're telling us would be to check the universities in your country. To see and try to learn as much "music" as you can. And at the same time to try and practice what you want to do. If you want to do film music, find students to practice with. If you want tot produce pop records, find people to help them towards that. If you want to compose... well... compose... Don't know how else to help at your current info. Quote
P.J. Meiser Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 There aren't really any. Getting a degree isn't really necessary in the freelance pop/advertising/film business and most schools that strongly promote such a degree (like Full Sail and the like) aren't worth your money. I'd just get a well-rounded education in music and maybe some business and take it from there. Quote
Pieter Smal Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 The University of Pretoria have a wonderful music department. Under Professor Joseph Stanford (my favourite person in the department), many fine Pianist have seen the light. These include the recent Johan Botes, Jannie Le Roux and Ben Schoeman (who won the Unisa International Piano Competition in 2008). I highly reccomend The University of Pretoria for anyone who wants to play piano seriously. The University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch also have very good music departments. But I favour Pretoria! nikolas Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Pieter: The guy didn't ask about being a pianist... :-/ He already has hugely broad scopes, but being a pianist won't help all that much! Quote

almacg Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Becoming a music producer is more a case of your ability and who you know, than what degree you have. But getting into a university with a good reputation would be a good idea, as you're bound to learn a lot. Just make sure you don't limit your knowledge to what you get taught in college. You can learn a hell of a lot about music producing by reading some good books on the subject. My old music technology teacher turned out to have been completely self-taught, and he was an incredibly good music producer. I think you are being a bit too broad. Music producing and composition are only related if you use a computer! If I were you I'd learn go to a university that centres heavily on composition and theory, whilst studying music production in your own time. Quote
DrPangloss Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 You might want to double major in music and business, or major in one and minor in the other. Quote
P.J. Meiser Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 yes there are...Hartt, Ithaca, Peabody, Berklee, Umass Lowell, Depaul, etc. Fair enough I guess. It's just that when I think about a "Music Production" school I think of mediocre but expensive trade schools like Full Sail and the like. Quote

Stevemc90 Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 Becoming a music producer is more a case of your ability and who you know, than what degree you have. It's a matter of connections only if you are lacking a degree imo...for example, my violin teacher's son was a Sound Recording Technology major at UMass Lowell (one of the best for production) and right after graduation earned an internship at Avatar Studios in NYC, because he had his degree...as an assistant he's already worked with Joshua Bell, Ludacris, John Mayer, etc. Quote

Nikolas, by becoming a music producer I mean becoming a professional person in producing music and composing original music. I don't want to become a songwriter(Lyricist as called in India). I live in India and I am 16 yrs old and I don't think there is much scope or any good school for music industry.... I am not rich enough as I live in India so..., I am unable to put my hands on latest technology! I am willing to spend around 35,000 dollars per year for my music education degree and training... Which includes all the other expenses too!! So can u suggest me some good colleges that can train me in producing commercial music??? Thanks again! Quote
