Zetetic Posted June 14, 2008 Author Posted June 14, 2008 .... Save yourself $80 and listen at home..... Hang on? How much does the average concert cost in the states?! The last concert I attended (by Angela Hewitt) cost me the equivalent of 10 dollars. The most expensive standard Prom tickets cost less than $80 here. Quote
Guest DOFTS Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 I bought two tickets at New Jersey Performing Arts Center Newark, NJ to watch the Boston Pops on July 12th. The two tickets cost me just under 500 dollars. I'm on the second tier, oh well. Quote
jujimufu Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 It is! I usually buy tickets for 5 pounds (~10 usd/7 eur), and I rarely pay more than 10-15 pounds for a good concert... I paid 5 pounds to see Boulez conduct the LSO playing Schoenberg, Bartok and Pintscher... Quote
robinjessome Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 We pay $12 just to watch the soundcheck. For the actual shows, $30 for extreme low end, mega-nosebleed seats. Very back row, 5th balcony. ... Any decent ticket runs you $80-120 (which, in comparison, isn't THAT bad) The symphony's not for student and low-lifes. Keeping prices high keeps out the riff-raff. Quote
Guest DOFTS Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Tis truth. The Boston Pops sell out every time so they can raise prices. It's a high commodity. Thus 500 for two isn't to shabby. Besides 500 isn't to shabby for me. Quote
composerorganist Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Boulez performing at Carnegie Hall a few months ago - cheapest seats were $35 for the worst seats (and they are bad, the damn orchestra looks like little specks and the sound is mostly from the amplification. Best seats were about $140-$150. The best deals for concerts are usually at churches and away from the big institutions (Symphony Space, The Kitchen etc in New York) the price is usually free and MUCH cheaper. For example, New York Virtuouso singers $15 at Symphony Space. In fact, the last time I went to a concert at one of the halls at Carnegie was over 3 years ago, however I have been listening to free period performances of Bach Cantatas and his contemporaries for free for several years at a churhc and some excellent contemporary music (where the composers were living!!) for less than $20 at one of the Chelsea art galleries. Another place you can see pianist (and chamber groups w/ piano) at least cheaper is at a few piano stores and Steinway hall in NYC. If I recall the price is about $20 -25 or less. Sometimes the museums (MOMA, The Cloisters) will feature performances at reasonable prices (say $20- 25, but it depends, for say some players it may be $50) Compared to some outside the US, our large perfroming arts centers are not as well-funded by public institutions so they turn to corporate donors but despite this the prices are higher here. One way around this is to buy a subscription to buy a package of say 3-4 concerts with good seats at a greatly reduced price - but if you are a student it may not be in your price range. Quote
tenor10 Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 Omg I pay $10 bucks for student rush, I even get free tickets from school Quote

Mr Lex. Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 The most I've ever paid for tickets to concert was $100 (Australian Dollars). But now I rarely pay for concert tickets as my piano teacher can get me free tickets through her contacts :P Quote
SSC Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 OMG! This IS awful! No wonder classical music is going to hell! (everywhere although so... :-/)But really! Such amazing prices??!?!??! Sorry, but I won't be spending 1/20th of my rent to go to a concert! gently caress! And I was so against piracy! :D:D:D:D REALLY. What the HELL are these prices? I go to concerts for FREE (I've paid.. maybe twice... ever) and I've gotten to see all sorts of impressive stuff. But even if I DID pay, prices aren't INSANE like this! 100$ for a ticket? Sorry, no. Hell, even 40$ for a ticket is like a punch in the gut. With regards to the original question, I take scores to concerts sometimes, and I've given scores to a couple of people when they attend my concerts when they wanted to see the score+music. What's the big deal? Specially if it's something ultra-well known like Bach or ..any of those dudes, you can find 100409204 recordings of the pieces so why not bring a score along. Plus unless you have the piece memorized you can see how the they do the dynamics, etc etc. ... But really, I don't really care much if it's a live performance or a CD unless a friend of mine or someone really AMAZING is playing, or it's something so amazing a CD doesn't do it justice (organ music, or symphonic music sometimes. Definitely modern music like Stockhausen or Penderecki...) Quote
composerorganist Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 I should qualify my prices as they do not reflect student discounts. So some of the prices for some venues may be comparable to what others pay abroad. Nevertheless, it depends on the performer and the venue. Also, the Metropolitan Opera House started offering I think $20 or $30 tickets for half-way decent seats for operas shown on certain weekdays (they took the idea from Broadway which has some shows such as Rent and Hairspray offer $20 tickets the day of the show at a certain time) Quote
Romanticist Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 If you think that's expensive, the RSO charged $250 for their 50th season..lucky for me phillip morris paid for 2 tickets..and gave them to my mom and I, but then again the concert was at the kennedy center in D.C. Quote
