Nigel Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Have you ever said to yourself "This piece is amazing! If only the composer was myself..." I have, many many times, and I thought it would be nice to see if anyone else shares my thoughts. Feel free to state the pieces you wished you had composed instead of the original composer. I'll start: 1. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, so heartbreaking. 2. from the Legend of 1900Sweet piece. The whole soundtrack of this movie is composed by Ennio Morricone, but this particular track isn't by him. I smile every time I hear this piece. 3. You're Everything by Chick Corea One of my favourite jazz pieces by the amazing Chick Corea. The slow part is ear-catching, while the fast part is really catchy. 4. I have yet to met somebody who doesn't like this piece. That says it all really. 5. By who, I don't know. I know technically this isn't a piece, but a song, but it gets my vote because of the "feel good" factor on its own. I mainly listen to soundtracks, and a little jazz, not much classical music, as of now, so most of the pieces I suggested are film music. Well, that's about it for now. I may add more later. Meanwhile, feel free to add yours! ;) Quote
Old Composer Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Songlines, by Andy Narell. It's such a beautiful piece, and really explores the potential of the steel drum ensemble. Quote
spherenine Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 I'm gonna go with "Stairway to Heaven," Beethoven's Fifth, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, "Iron Man," "Thriller," and "The Macarena." Quote
Marius Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Rhapsody in Blue probably. But there are soooooo many. Quote
DrPangloss Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Would it be blasphemous to say I wish I'd written The Overture to Candide? After that, I'd probably say I wish I'd written... Musically: The Waltz from Nine (Yeston) The Ballet from Dear World (Herman) "What'll I Do?" (Irving Berlin) almost half the score to The Frogs (Sondheim) Lyrically: "For Good" from Wicked (Schwartz) all of A Little Night Music (Sondheim) "Unusual Way" from Nine (Yeston) That's a good list, though I'm missing some, I'm sure. composerorganist Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Stravinsky's Les Noces Ligeti's Ramifications Quote
Violist Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Bach's Chaconne. But then again, like Brahms, I would probably go insane with the ecstasy of having composed such a great work. Quote
Guest DOFTS Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 1. Schindler's List Main ThemeIn my opinion, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, so heartbreaking. Same for me. Quote
Lorenzo Salvagni Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 The music for "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso", especially this scene: Quote
goodridge_winners Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim I Absolutely agree with you QC. Quote
Old Composer Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Same for me. Having not seen Schindler's List I just purchased the main theme by itself. Honestly, it's fine, but I don't see it as a wonderful work of art. I can think of plenty of concert works that are far more beautiful, and even some other film scores/themes that are more beautiful (finale to Edward Scissorhands, for one) Just my opinion though. Nigel Posted June 14, 2008 Author Posted June 14, 2008 I Absolutely agree with you QC. I bought the OST to Sweeney Todd and loved it. Thanks for posting that piece. I will check it out. And I've got one more: Catchy catchy! BTW, what's that whiny little instrument that comes in at 0:29? A muted trumpet is the closest guess I can make. I've never heard any instrument with that timbre before, hopefully someone can point it out for me.:) Quote
DrPangloss Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 The Chicken Dance!!!(kidding.) Think of the residuals! Quote

Zetetic Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 This thread is mad! But hmmm.... it would be nice to march into my composition lesson with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (which of course would have been, up until now, unknown!). Quote
Nirvana69 Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Debussy's entire Suite Bergamasque (not just Clair De Lune, mind you), for one. Ravel's Alboarada Del Gracioso and his piano concerto in G Major. Beethoven's 9th symphony. Bartok's piano sonata (sans the second movement which I never much cared for) And this: Yes, more Ravel. I may come back to this thread when something else blows me away. Morgri Posted June 14, 2008 Posted June 14, 2008 Jaws theme music - John Willaims I really love how effective that theme song is. Quote

Exodizer Posted June 15, 2008 Posted June 15, 2008 John Adams Violin Concerto. I always picture myself coming up with those ideas. If you hadn't heard it, I think it's the greatest piece in the last 20 years (probaly ALOT longer). Mendelssohn's Overture to a Midsummer's night Dream. He was 16 when he wrote this. How is that possible? I wish I could write that piece. Quote
