Nigel Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Finally! I love pop music. Not all, but I like them. I have no idea why people can despise them so much. Yeah, it uses the same chord progression, it uses the same instruments, same form etc. etc. I like Robbie Williams, his older stuff though. Stevemc90 Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 This is just to prove not all "pop musicians" classical ventures are scraggy Quote
MatthewSchwartz Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 Is this about pop music or "popular" (aka non-art) music? o.O I'm guessing the latter, but the title is misleading. :/ Quote

SSC Posted June 23, 2008 Author Posted June 23, 2008 I think the "pop" label is sort of retarded but it's quickly understood what it's meant when we're comparing it to, say, classical music. Though, I would consider pop music "art" as well. So the distinction isn't that great. I guess the problem is when people themselves don't write pop/rock/ETC music and are only in the classical field. There's just a different type of art to it that becomes evident if you're writing them songs. Though, if you're into modern music it's a little hard not to get involved with certain "pop" figures, like Zappa or Hendrix. It's all modern music, really. I still think that composers should be able to rock out or jam like the best of them, at least in writing if not with actual instruments. It's a good experience. So, um. I read that radiohead's ok computer had some inspiration on Penderecki XD Weird. Plus in kid A there's something to do with the Tristan chord. ... Weird. Honestly radiohead doesn't do much for me though I appreciate the ideas. I'm much rather for the blur (on the self-titled album or 13)'s experiments and brit-pop mix. Quote
robinjessome Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I think the "pop" label is sort of retarded but it's quickly understood what it's meant when we're comparing it to, say, classical music. A good point... My perspective: There's BIG genres and little genres: "classical" "jazz" "pop" "other" are BIG genres. Generally, I can lump anything into one of these. I'm not big on labels, and don't tend to divide music along these lines... "pop" is just a verbal designation to differentiate all the pop-type musics from the classical or jazz. "Pop" includes, but is not limited to: rock, folk, indie, rap, pop, emo, drum n bass.... Music has fragmented so severely I find it exhausting to try and pigeonhole and define genres anymore... To me, there's only music. Quote
920bpm Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Oh man I haven't heard the original, but this is pretty amazing: Quote
MatthewSchwartz Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I'm pretty sure most people understand rock, folk, indie, and rap as "popular music", not "pop music". :) Pop music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Popular music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Of which, "popular" relates to the music's branching out from the fine arts, and it's traditionally performed for all classes of people, rather than just the upper-class elite that classical has historically catered to. robinjessome Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Rufus is the loving man, a great composer (what's going on with his NYMet opera?). *shrug* I dunno...last year he did that MAJOR July Garland production and toured "Release The Stars"... I suspect the Opera is going full tilt - he's a super busy and guy, eh! But, yeah...Rufus is fantastic! Quote
Stevemc90 Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 i actually read a few months back an article that said he, of all the commissions, had made the most progress...i remember it saying something like he was being influenced by Janacek too (haven't heard his operas yet), interesting Quote
gianluca Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 Even though some of you know my stance on this type of music, listening to some of the songs linked in this thread I can't help feeling the urge to restate it. The jaw-dropping simplemindedness and lack of artistic merit of pop music keeps astonishing me. Unbelievable how one-dimensional these songs sound and how limited and impoverished they are rhythmically, melodically, harmonically and structurally. This music is easy listening, easy watching, easy thinking. I've just listened to quite a number of songs linked here and seldom have I heard so many clich Quote
