Spoon284 Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 nonsense. how is this - YouTube - Autechre - Gantz Graf [best Quality!] - contemporary dance music or even close to anything pop? I can see your point, the line is pretty blurry. To me it still comes under the very broad heading of "pop" because it is basically a weird sort of electronica stretched to its limit. I know what you mean though. Anyway, enough bickering, more stuff: (Ah, the super-over-the-top goodness! :D)Franz Ferdinand - Take me Out Thom Yorke - Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses Quote

pliorius Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 basically it's all dance and folk/court music taken to some extreme 'artfull' points. again, they are most probably 1000 times as popular as 'electronica' (new folklore) taken to its extreme. this is pop music. but, most probably, more 'art' than some other pieces mentioned in this thread, 'art' in some more superior way than just simply autechre 'pop'! again, aphex twin 'meltphace 6' takes no less skill to create those subtle and nasty beats flowing majestically with these-flutes, than grieg's happy hardcore. overall, i don't think our young guys provided valid arguments as for why they consider something 'pop'. if it's because of chart thing, then basically, you're lost in a land without any 'genre' or 'stylistic' qualifications. the fact that london sinfonieta takes to arrange warp works is most probably the reason to think at least part of 'electronica' is considered art music, same goes for alarm will sound doing great work on arranging aphex twin's legacy. i still wait what they'll do with autechre, as promised. autechre, same group, which resonates into works of such noise/improvisation giant as supersilent. so, if grieg, gilberto, bartok and bizet is art music, so are some of the examples dismissed here as being not accepted into very narow 'art' world. whew. Spoon284 Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Hm, well I interpreted the topic more to mean "popular music" as opposed to "classical" or "world" music rather than "pop" as opposed to "art", especially since aphex twin was mentioned on the first page. More "out there" subgenres still come under the broad heading of "pop". Pilorious, everything you've posted is still "classical" (obviously). Whilst it might still technically be "dance music", it's obvious to any listener that those pieces come from a completely different genre to autechre, aphex twin etc. Looking through the rest of the thread I can see that everyone's basically already had this discussion anyway: I think the "pop" label is sort of retarded but it's quickly understood what it's meant when we're comparing it to, say, classical music. Though, I would consider pop music "art" as well. So the distinction isn't that great. "pop" is just a verbal designation to differentiate all the pop-type musics from the classical or jazz. "Pop" includes, but is not limited to: rock, folk, indie, rap, pop, emo, drum n bass.... Quote

robinjessome Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Pliroious - you're arguing a moot point here. Of course there are exceptions to the rule. There are people who straddle the line, obliterate it, or cross back and forth. No big deal. However, for the purposes of this discussion just let it go. Quote
pliorius Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 my point is that the rule is wrong (illogical, mute, empty and imbecil), and generally non-aplicable to many music that was and is posted here (it's not even a rule, since it is imposed from heaven knows where, like measuring beauty of a christmas tree by standart outlook of a maple!, - it has no leaves, must be a bush). but, ok, i will not go on arguing. let this be a thread for ALL music besides what elitists call ART,Z...
