robinjessome Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Chris, We'll conduct this in an informal discussion, if that works for you. Let's start by figuring out where you stand, theory-wise - so, how much theory do you have? I'm assuming a working knowledge of Major and minor scales, and their diatonic triads. 7th chords? Modes? Just lemme know what aspects you want to understand in greater detail. ;) Robin
Deminicus Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 hmm, let's see. Yes, I have knowledge of Major and minor scales, as well as seventh chords (although I would like to understand 7th chords in more detail). I don't really have much (if any) knowledge about modes (I have an idea of what they are, but that is about it).
robinjessome Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 Cool. In jazz, one way of thinking of it is that 7th chords and modes go hand-in-hand. Modes can be inferred from different chords - this chord/scale relationship is the basis of modal jazz. HERE'S a good overview of how modes are constructed, and how they relate to their corresponding chord. More: Modes of the Major scale Modes of the ascending melodic minor scale Read these sites, they explain it better than I can! ;) Make sense?
