darth_plagus Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 Hi, I'm new to this forum and I don't know whether this is the right place to ask this question? so if it isn't please exept my apologizes. recently I've been working on a very short composition. 16 bars to be exact. and I've been advised to use only pivot chords to modulate. 8 bars in i have to modulate to the subdominant but I can stay in the subdonimant for only two bars and I only get ot use a limited ammount of chords( tonic, super tonic subdominant and dominant). so I was wondering whether it's pratical to always use pivot chords in this kind of situations. or should I just use phrase modulation or chomatic modulation instead? really appretiate any comments on this! thank you.
Vissequ Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 It's whatever works in the piece. I don't think there's an "always practical" situation for composition. And if there is, there shouldn't be.
Guest Invisionary Posted February 19, 2006 Posted February 19, 2006 I think after time we begin to feel when its the right time to modulate in a work, and therefore the modulation is easier in that you can hear where you are going by the accidental. Although, sometimes I have to modulate by reason alone. I am not expert in modulation. I too would like to understand better. Jeremy
Calehay Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 I suggest you definitely practice using pivot chords, but after you get a good handle on the theory part of music, you should take everything with a grain of salt and go with what your inspiration and ear tell you. It's always good to know the rules before you bend them.
