Young Prodigy Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 I've been wondering about this, can rock music ever truly fit in a video or film score? I'm curious about this and want to know. Why am I asking? Well, video game wise, most of the time when a song has a rock like sound, it's pawned off as being typical 2D RPG music. I guess what I'm also asking though is, is it possible for "Rock" like music to actually really "fit" in a game as well as orchestral music does? And also, if the answer to that question is yes, how could you make a song with a rockish beat and have it NOT come off as a typical 2D game song? I'm also interested in knowing this. So yeah, that's all. To clarify what I mean by Rock Music, is anything that has that typical rock beat or has electric guitars. I guess I can also call it Metal music too. This is probably a perfect example of what I mean... YouTube - Baten Kaitos - The True Mirror ~ Guitar Version Quote
Johnny Fawkes Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 I can't even begin to comprehend how it wouldn't. Granted, typically such orchestral music has a better chance at evoking the atmosphere a soundtrack designer would want, rock music can and has been quite befitting, and some of the more popular game and movie titles have relied exclusively on "rock" soundtracks. Furthermore, 2D RPGs rarely featured much "rock" music at all. Rock, metal specifically, is most common in side-scrolling shooters. Rock music has and still does have a considerable presence in video game music and it's silly to try to insinuate a disparity. tl;dr: YES. Quote
Christopher Dunn-Rankin Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 I think rock music fits Guitar Hero very well... Quote
EldKatt Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Well, video game wise, most of the time when a song has a rock like sound, it's pawned off as being typical 2D RPG music. Like the 2D RPG music of Koji Kondo or Nobuo Uematsu? Pawned off? I'm not following you. Quote
MatthewSchwartz Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 I think "duh" would be an appropriate answer. Have you never seen Pulp Fiction? Or Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Shame on you. Quote
Nathan Madsen Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I agree with many of the other posts- this is a terrible question. Terrible in that: this has already been shown and proven many times over. ANY style of music can fit into a film or video game project. It really just depends on that project and the style direction of the crew. There have been many, many cases where it worked very well. spacecowgoesmoo Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 OMG. OK, go listen to FF7 Crisis Core. It's 50% hard rock and 50% beautiful orchestral songs. Quote
Ferkungamabooboo Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 I dunno, I kinda see what he means here. You need a certain style to effectively evoke a mood. While old-school games were often Midi Rock, I think that "traditional rock" (the hell kind of term is that?) music involves vocals, which puts the music first in the minds of the player, not the action. I guess sports games would work, since that's kind of the feeling you get from a stadium, but its rather hard to imagine chilling in a truly immersive game with 'Tallica blasting. Quote
CaliSurfing Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 hey there, new to this site, I hope I can be beneficial and share what i know, because I know i will learn a lot here! Thanks a lot everybody! Quote
CaliSurfing Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 Music is really awesome with music, and the way technology is moving, like the Motorokr, music is being integrated with everything, especially now with the Guitar hero franchise and Rockband too! The music does seem to go well together well. Quote
Old Composer Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Listen to Rammstein. Everytime I listen to them, I just want to bludgeon someone over a head, a feeling that goes along with watching action movies. Quote
Franzman Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 One word.. DOOM! There has never been a more perfect fit. :D Doom E1M1 again Quote
SSC Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Doom's amazin'. But there's also Quake games! And Full Throttle! And Guilty Gear! And KOF! And Megaman X games! And ROTT! And-- It'd be a pages and pages long list of games with rock soundtracks which are awesome. Silly thread is silly. I guess that's why I never really replied. But Doom FTW! One of my favouritest games ever. Quote
Mitchell Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I'm sure rock music would fit in quite nicely in a movie about rock stars. Quote
BeyondMoonlight Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Army of Two has pretty decent rock-style compositions that really go with dodging bullets and flanking turrets. I've always thought it would be interesting to make rock renditions of the Final Fantasy VIII soundtrack. (That's a game I'll still play :), even though I am an avid Xbox 360'er) Quote
SSC Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Aw but the FFVIII piano collection is so damn good, I don't think it lends itself much to rock anyways. You can still see some rox in the black mages albums, though it's only a couple of tracks from FFVIII. Quote
angushay Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 You can use any music for video games and movies, as long as it's in context. For instance, an electric guitar would seem out of context in an English Victorian romance film, just as a solo piano Debussy piece would be out of context in a scene set in a Moscow nightclub. Quote

For instance, an electric guitar would seem out of context in an English Victorian romance film, just as a solo piano Debussy piece would be out of context in a scene set in a Moscow nightclub. That's pretty arguable, since context can be manipulated and you can just as well fit the above examples no problem in those settings. In fact you can fit'em no problem just as you mentioned and leave it as is... Depends on what you're trying to do, I guess. I play doom sometimes with Bach organ music in the background and it's really nice, so. Quote
oboeducky Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 This thread is silly. All types of music are applicable in the right setting. Quote
SSC Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 This thread is silly. All types of music are applicable in the right setting. And "right" setting is completely relative and subjective, yaaay. Yeah I don't understand the thread either honestly. Quote
Ferkungamabooboo Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Got to do? Got to do with it? What's postmodernism but a second-hand theory(tion)? Quote
