To some degree, I think that you're right. You can learn a lot of things but perserverance to keep trying and to keep with something, that takes more than many people have in todays world. We're used to being given our way and having whatever we want.

Music isn't like that. Sometimes things that people see as being ugly, musicians or artists, see as beautiful and precious.

Well a lot of people ARE lazy~

That's the thing. Lazy people aren't inspired by almost anything. We as musicians must learn to free our minds and think about things that we normally wouldn't. Sometimes, if I am not inspired, I meditate and think about things that I would never think about on a normal basis.

I read science journals - they often go over my head, but to see some sort of bliss in equations provides at least interesting ideas

I read religious journals occassionally, not often... Sometimes, try to use the equations to "formulate" the entire piece. Take a variable that is talked about and allow it to become an instrument. Then take others and do the same. The product of the equation, in turn, will be your finished piece.
