w.shipley Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 So, I have a huge dilemma. I am, by no means, a piano player. I have taken two semesters of Piano lab in college and gotten A's in both classes, but I'm not a "piano player." A problem I'm having is that I'm unfamiliar with piano music and I don't know how to write something beautiful like I want to. I usually just end up with blocked chords or simple arpeggios or something, and I think that's why I haven't written any [instrument/voice] and piano works. What should I do? Any advice? Thanks. Tokkemon Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 As simple as it sounds, learn to play piano. Lean the mechanics of the instrument. You don't have to be a "player" as you call it. Make it your second (or third) instrument. And learn it simply for the sake of learning how to write for it. I did this with the organ and it was imensely helpful. Also, study the piano literature to see how other composers did it. If they can do it, so can you! Quote
Dan Gilbert Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I wouldn't say you have to learn how to play piano, just look at piano writing by a lot of different composers. If you aren't a pianist, I wouldn't compose for piano by trying to play it/improvise it. Quote
