w.shipley Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 How many pieces do you work on at any given time? Do you spread yourself out with a lot of works or stick mainly to just one? As for myself, generally I "work" on one project at a time, but when I'm inspired by something or "hear (in my head)" a new melody that doesn't fit the piece, I write it down and put it away until later. That seems to be the best method for me. What about you? :) Quote
Flint Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I always work on several projects at once unless under some type of deadline. I don't like to focus on one work because it becomes tiring to stare at the same score all the time, and my interest wanes. Quote
Tokkemon Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I always have about 547,129 projects awaiting completion at any given time. Though I tend to focus on two or three at a time and really work on them. That's usually the only way my pieces get finished. Also a deadline helps, incentive helps even more. Quote
James H. Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Definitely several at a time for me. Right now I have a piece for theremin and piano, a sonata for tuba, three piano pieces, and who knows what else that I can't think of right now. Most of the stuff I write I don't finish... so I periodically go back and add a few measures to one of a bajillion unfinished pieces when I'm tired of working on something else. Quote
Ferkungamabooboo Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 A few at once, but I focus on one or two at a time... easier for me to get into a piece Quote
Dev Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 I usually start several pieces all at one time, then work on them one by one until each is done Quote
MidiKareshi Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 I tend to start on a piece and work at it full steam, only to suddenly get inspiration for another piece. It's usually either that or I run into some sort of difficulty and decide to switch to something else before I wear myself out. Hence, I always have more projects in the pipeline than I can work on at once. I would estimate that for every piece of music I finish, I'll have spawned another ten or so incomplete pieces to work on when the mood strikes me. Quote
goodridge_winners Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 i wonder how beethoven and mozart coped? they didn't even have finale... Quote
oboeducky Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 I always always have at least two or three pieces in the works. Granted, I take months to finish anything, but whatever. :P If I had better incentive than "I will feel good when I'm done composing this" I probably would finish faster. Quote
MidiKareshi Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 If I had better incentive than "I will feel good when I'm done composing this" I probably would finish faster. For me, it's "once I finish this I'll have one more track for that visual novel I'm going to make one day". Quote
Mark Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Only ever one piece at a time, but I always have very detailed plans of future works in my head, and much of my time is spent in that stage of planning. I currently have big plans for about 4 big works, but severly doubt that any of them will ever get past the first 20 bars :(. Quote
goodridge_winners Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 i give up after about, 4 bars...my biggest problem is development. Quote
chodelkovzart Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 i wonder how beethoven and mozart coped? they didn't even have finale... good question......0.o Quote
healey.cj Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 If I had better incentive than "I will feel good when I'm done composing this" I probably would finish faster. I wish that were true lol It can work against you I find. Because when you feel pressured to write something the creativity dries up real quick. Which normally means I end up just writing crap to get stuff done. lol I remember when I finished last semester (I'm studying composition) and had finally got rid of all my compositions which were due, I suddenly felt like writing music... Which I hadn't for the last 3 months. i wonder how beethoven and mozart coped? they didn't even have finale... No, but they could Audiate and had phenomenal ears. Ergo, their brain was pre-installed with the finale software. lol Chris Quote
robinjessome Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 How many pieces do you work on at any given time? One. Always. I guess I'm the odd-one-out. :whistling: Quote
goodridge_winners Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Beethoven had phenomenal ears? :P :P indeed Quote
angushay Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 I usually work on around 3-4 projects at once, but generally have several others "open" (i.e. unfinished). Quote
manossg Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 I am working on several projects at any given time. Priority goes to commissioned/paid ones, of course. My personal projects can always wait. Quote
chodelkovzart Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Beethoven had phenomenal ears? :P lol. Quote
Rajaton Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Usually, I work on about 1 to 5 at a time. Once I have exhausted my mind on a song for a set amount of time, I just switch to a new score, or idea/theme. Quote
