Nirvana69 Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Well, technically, you don't NEED most of the stuff you listed above, it just simply helps. All you really NEED is an imagination and a good ear for figuring out what kind of music should go with any given situation. Hell, some would argue that a lot of famous and succesful incidental composers don't even have the former. But, to better answer your question, keyboard is prolly a good instrument to start out with. Some sort of sequencer or notation program would come in might handy. High-quality samples can never hurt either but those are rather expensive. You can find passable soundfonts over the internet for free anyway. Education can also definetly help but in no way is it really required. The most important things you can do right now is buy a keyboard, secure some sort of notation program (Finale is great but if you don't have the money, there is Anvil studios), and listening to a crap load of incidental music. Figure out some composers who write soundtracks you consistently enjoy and listen to as much of their work as you can. Figure out exactly what they're doing, what makes you like them, and how exactly their music interacts with the film/game/etc. in question. Of course, that can be somewhat difficult if you don't know any theory. Not impossible, just difficult. I'd also suggest looking at some free music theory lessons online. Quote
Ferkungamabooboo Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Melody Assistant is free as a partly-functional (weak printing and exporting) program. But, you'll need to learn how to deal with sheet music. Does your iMac have Garageband? That's a powerful program, even though it's built in. If not, try Audacity, though it's a bit less user-friendly. What kind of "Incidental" music are you trying for? Quote
Arfus Posted September 21, 2008 Author Posted September 21, 2008 yeha i got garageband but im gonna buy logic studio which got logic pro its a okay software i guess but i want to try making some remixes aswell should i get a MIDI keyboard? Do i need to learn how to play it like a normal keyboard or? Quote
Ferkungamabooboo Posted September 21, 2008 Posted September 21, 2008 Logic's very good, especially if you're into MIDI. Knowing how to play keyboard will definitely help playing keyboards. Quote
