MusicalComposer Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 What if we were to have a tutoring program here. Maybe have a lesson on composition every week for beginners, or give some basic info on Compositions and how they work. I have a few friends who like to compose music, but don't know any of the rules for doing so. it is like someone on this forum has said... (non-direct quote) "Some atonal music is just like some 3 year old doodled on a piece of paper and somebody played it". Wouldn't it be nice if we could help those people along there way with a few helpful nudges and hints? Quote
Marius Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 That's a good idea, I'm actually in the process of writing a book of music exercises for piano and I'm teaching 2 or three students. Quote
Mike Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 It would be a lovely idea if people were willing to do it. Quote
CaltechViolist Posted February 26, 2006 Posted February 26, 2006 Weekly would be difficult... but could we have the more experienced composers here commit to having someone produce an article or even a Q&A session every two weeks or so? Quote
MusicalComposer Posted February 27, 2006 Author Posted February 27, 2006 We could. An Article would be good. Maybe we could just set up a read-only area where people could come and look at the articles. Quote
Daniel Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 Read only would be good, because otherwise we'd have people coming in after it bickering about spelling mistakes, and how some line doesnt fit their opinion. Quote
MusicalComposer Posted February 27, 2006 Author Posted February 27, 2006 That's what i was thinking. Quote
chopin Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 This is what the wiki is for. If you guys want to write tutoring programs, you have the power to write the site. Try creating a profile to get the hang of how to use the wiki. Then you can add a discussion here to call out to other members to help contribute to the wiki if you like. Anyone can add or change your tutorial, so that all composers will be contributing to make sure the information is correct. I will help you guys out if you are serious about doing this, just let me know. Quote
Daniel Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 The wiki idea doesnt work so well for this, because a less knowledgeable person, who thinks they know best, can change some correct information to whatever they think is right. You can't keep relying on the original author to keep coming back and correcting this. Quote
chopin Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 The wiki idea doesnt work so well for this, because a less knowledgeable person, who thinks they know best, can change some correct information to whatever they think is right. On the flip side, articles can't be collaborated on in this forum since it isn't a wiki. What if you type in wrong information? No one would be able to correct it. We could start a forum for questions and answers for the wiki tutorials. I don't think we should really put articles as "threads" because a forum is more for discussions, and everyone owns their discussions...which means, no one can edit or add to them. If someone changes the wiki for the worse, its easy to revert, or even protect the page if it gets out of hand. However, that is the goal of the wiki, to have everyone interested in a topic collaborate. I am not trying to be stubborn or sound like a "know it all", but I think this is the best way to do it....in fact, this is why I even added the wiki functionality, because of this reason. Then we can simply link the articles to the forum for questions and answers..... Quote
