I've been listening to the La Mer symphony by Claude Debussy, and in my opinion this is one of the greatest symphonies written, or at least, just one of my favorites. Especially the 3rd movement. The opening just screams out Stravinsky to me, and I believe that he was a big influence on his writing. Anyway, I would suggest checking this out. It's got the Debussy sound through and through and it is so incredibly beautiful and intense as well, and, well, I just love it!

Here's a legal link for download! :)

On a sidenote, if you want many many other songs for download the Peabody Institute has many up on their site, and I would suggest checking it out. Mahler, Dvorak, Beethoven, and many others!

As far as I know, La Mer isn't a symphony: it's often called a symphonic poem or, as Debussy called it, three symphonic fragments.

I'm not the greatest fan of Debussy's music, but I must admit La Mer definately captures the true mood of the sea: the moving of the waves, the wind... Any little detail will speak out something more about the ocean. An impressionist masterpiece. However, I still prefer Iberia

What I love about Debussy is his use of the orchestra.

He wouldn't go bombastic (like Stravinsky) but would create just as much force and beauty through the use of a smaller orchestra. La mer not being an exception. Debussy's capturing of the sea is the most realistic that I have heard any composer portray.also (Having the horns double the solo celli was an amazing feat)

I'm reviewing his Opera, and I must say that that is a master piece. Great amazing things on form, motif treatment, counterpoint, use of the voice, orchestration.

Anybody who is anybody or anybody who has low-selfesteem and views them as a nobody check this out! (Opera and La mer)

La Mer or Nocturnes? I enjoy La Mer better, how about you?

*Stravinsky didn't usually purposefully aim for larger orchestras, Diaghilev said I have more brass entering the orchestra, you compose for them. :) Wagner a complete opposite...according to Berlioz.
