I am open to changing that attitude. However, I just don't see it happening. I hate voice in nearly every classical context, and I doubt that it's possible for somebody to write something considered opera that I will like.

It's possible to extrapolate from what you have heard, and that's what I'm doing. The only likely way that I'll change my opinion is if my tastes change, not if I hear new opera.

Now, I'm NOT close-minded about Mahler. I've listened to a lot of Mahler (probably more than you) and studied and analysed it (again, probably MUCH more than you). So you can't say I'm close-minded about it. It just doesn't speak to me. It bores me.

Perhaps you have listened to more Mahler..and yeah, you've probably studied much more than me..but you're also much MUCH older than I, so I'm fine and I have time. And I never did say or even emphasized that you were close-minded about Mahler..so why do you need to go on as if I did?

i find the whole romantic era a bit boring and uninspring.to me it sounds like elevator music(especially MAHLER),the farther along in time you go.people say this about baroque and classical sometimes

to me they are much more inspring and alive.

on the other note

many things i barely consider music but one might

rock

rap

pop

techno

country

etc blah

No, I completely agree with Bradley. To me, in large part, the romantic era is flawed in its perception of musical expression in that it assumes that emotion must be crammed down the listener's throat in order to be understood, which is completely untrue. To that end, most romantic music sounds terribly overwrought and schmalzy to me. But that's me :)

The error here is not that someone dislikes any particular period/style.

The error is when they start to justify it with pseudo-analytical reasons which all deny the simple fact that it's a personal preference.

I don't care for most Classical and Romantic era music.

But there is no "flaw" in it (which is a BS reason, by the way).

It just doesn't speak to me the way other music does.

Notice I also said "most" and not "all", since I have a number of very favourite works which happen to fit into every single category I generally dislike.

I dislike Rap/Hip-hop (and pretty much all variants thereof) and a lot of Rock music, simply because they are not genres that reflect my reality nor the world I grew up in.

Despite having a jazz-loving family, I just can't get into a lot of that, either, though I love the old standards. Apparently, I like "over-produced" music.

And yup, one of my favourite pop tunes has a bit of "rap" in it, and another is pretty "rock-ish", and I like a lot of Country/Western music, and I have some favourite Mozart pieces, as well as some Mendelssohn and Franck...

So yes, it's actually possible to like and dislike without actually liking ALL and disliking ALL.

People are so close-minded about things, and so complacent in their likes and dislikes, satisfied that the world revolves around their taste in music. And that taste will never change, it is set in stone. Yeah, right.

Headbanger: "Hey dude, I hate that classical music stuff"... and he has the soundtracks to Star Wars and Lord of the Rings in his collection.

Classical snob: "Ew! I HATE that pop music"... and he has Jesus Christ Superstar in HIS library.

There's always SOMEthing from any style that you WILL like for whatever reason.

Meh. I like a lot of rock, and I'm disappointed by the lack of respect for popular music here. I can accept, like QcC says, that it doesn't reflect the reality he grew up in, but I don't get why people hate it without a good reason.

Mahler? Elevator music?

Methinks Bradley has had some EPIC elevator rides in his past.

Lol.

There isn't a lot of music I don't like, but yes, of course, Pachelbel's boring Canon. I only hate it though because it's a vaguely pretty piece that is nonetheless so vapid that studying it simply becomes horrible after a while. And we 'studied' it in music at 12/13 for like a WHOLE TERM. Ugh, it makes me want to vomit.

<< I'll just interject here that I like Mahler :P >>

Quite a lot of Beethoven genuinely bores me, I cannot get my teeth into it, especially the piano sonatas. It's just not my style. I'm not dissing it. I just don't get much from it. But I am horribly uneducated when it comes to the early 19th century. For some reason I find in history as well as music, barely anything from this period interests me, even though I love the surrounding eras.

I have time and (usually) respect for most pop and rock etc, and am naturally really into certain popular artists. Though I would say that before I met my boyfriend (who is bigly into such stuff) I probably wasn't so much.

There was a piece I saw recently by David Hill that was just so boring I couldn't believe it had been published. It was literally just five pages of Dmaj chords. I don't know how many other people really do like his stuff though, maybe they're just scared of his reputation. He's a brilliant organist.

I like alot of music and I can't say that I dislike any of it but what I don't enjoy are the bands and singers from the disney channel like Hannah Montanna, Jonas Brothers. I just get angry writing there names. I mainly dislike music that is written and performed badly only for commercial and social interest. Sure, all composers from early Romantic to 12th C. were employed for commercial reasons but they were also saw the craft and importance of their works.

Whew, I feel better.

*pats mael on the shoulder, while horrifiedly staring at the words "mozart's symphonies", "mozart's piano concertos", and "chopin's ballades". *
