pliorius Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 i heard nietzche's piano stuff. well, it's romantic but at moments remind me of some satie movements. but one thing i know - nietzsche would come to wagner's castle and improvise to death, while wagner would envy him, for he was scraggy at the piano. though if i had to choose between nietzsche as philosopher and wagner as composer, i'd take nietzsche anytime anyplace. besides, nietzsche was better musician than wagner the thinker. pliorius Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Why are you comparing Nietzsche to Wagner?... nietzsche and wagner were very close and afterwards very hostile to each other. nietzche even written a pamflet against wagner. AND tried to seduce his wife cosima, for he was in love with her. there are lots of threads connecting nietzsche and wagner. certainly an intriguing relationship. as far as i know, nietzsche started to despise wagner after knowing that he was never considered a true friend, because his philosophical ideas were just beyond what wagner has ever thought and where he was going with his germanism bullshit. after knowing that, nietzsche was alieniated from wagner and couldn't like his pump music. what he (nietzsche) saw in wagner's ideas, he saw it in his music and that was pretty much disgusting. on the same note, nietzsche composed and tried to give his thoughts not just philosophical, poetical, but musical form as well. he liked to sing alone. well, he was really musical man. but when he showed his compositions to wagner, wagner said leave it (composing) to me and go on with your writing. that was bitter moment for nietzsche, for he had his ideas about music, that were different from wagner and were due to serve another purpose altogether. all in all, nietzsche was far superior as a genius than wagner and their life being so much intermingled, it makes rather an interesting topic beyond these virus-cancer tonality/atonality irrelevances.
