Hello there! I searched the forum for a thread regarding video game music, but I didn't find any so I thought to start one myself.

Now, I can't say I am the most knowledgeable person on the field of video games, but I own a computer since I was 4 years old (1990 or so) and have played a number of games during these years. I can't remember any memorable music from the DOS era although I kind of liked the music from the space shoot' em up Xenon II if anyone is familiar with it.

Anyway, my most favourite music is definitely the one of Jeremy Soule. Here's the theme of Kuldahar, a town in Icewind Dale (an RPG based on DnD rules).

Another good track is the theme from the Easthaven town again from the same game.

Enjoy!

I quite like the music to Fable, I must say.

Just searched for Fable's music. Didn't know that Danny Elfman has also made music for the video game industry. Nice music!

Oh, correction! Danny Elfman composed the main theme only...

Here's another favorite piece of mine. It's from Oblivion (I haven't played the game, but I discovered the music in youtube and some of it I loved it).

Ah, Donkey Kong Country! Excellent music. The second one had the best variety, I feel, but the first one had some superb tunes. The third one was great as well, I think it's just often overlooked because it's kind of the weird one.

Megaman music is quite nice as well. Good tunes.

I like Battle for Olympus, or Battle of Olympus, I'm not sure which. Though, most of the music in the game is drawn from outside sources, I'm pretty sure.

I think my favourites are Final Fantasy XII (pretty much the entire score)

some excerpts from Finale Fantasy XI (notably South Gustaberg)

and I really like the music in World of Warcraft.

unfortunately, I don't actually KNOW all that much video game music... only those games I play.

Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VI/VII

The Donkey Kong games of course have such nice music in them too.

Who could forget Zelda Ocarina of Time too? Those catchy ocarina melodies...

I'm quite the fan of the Earthbound soundtrack too. I love the soundtrack to Civilization IV also.

I find the Earthbound soundtrack to be one of the most interesting things about the game. Quite quirky and rather original for its time.

I'm also a fan of a lot of FFX's music (Not To Zanarkand though which I hate with a passion); mainly Hamauzu's contributions to thread though. Uematsu's are average at best and Nakano's output was... uneven to say the say the least. Many fans claim it's the weakest of the new generation of FF soundtracks but I just don't see it. If anything, FFVIII is the weakest for me. FFVII is also a rather nice soundtrack but Uematsu in general just doesn't do much for me.

I also like a lot of the soundtrack from Dark Cloud 2 but it's been forever since I've actually listened to it.

Roger on Chrono Trigger and FFVI. Imo the 2 most foundational soundtracks in RPG history

For FPS: DOOM (the original)

For RTS: Command & Conquer and Red Alert, both by Frank Klepaki

This thread has made me start replaying through Donkey Kong Country. As soon as I beat the first one (almost done) I'll move on to the 2nd which is my favorite.

Here's another nice one from the game:

Well, I said megaman music, but if I had to pick my top favourite examples I would have to go with Hitoshi Sakimoto's Vagrant Story soundtrack and Gradius V.

Goddamn brilliant stuff.

PS: Oh let's not forget Final fantasy tactics, yea.

Go jump off a cliff. To Zanarkand is very pretty, and certainly not gag inducing  :(

Nevertheless, Koji Kondo's on the top of my list.

It's pretty, sure. But I'm just tired of everyone going "OMGZ! To Zanarkand! OMGZ!" since it is one of the lesser tracks on the entire OST. Plus, I've heard no less than 50 interpretations of it so it's starting to get a little tiring.

Howevver, I will say that Hamauzu's arrangement of it on the piano collections album (while not a whole lot different) is much better than the original.

To Zanarkand is perhaps not gag-inducing, but I do skip over that track. There are better ones on the soundtrack for sure. In particular, 'Wandering Flames' and the two forest themes. Those I can think of off the top of my head, but there are other good ones too.
