Cody Loyd Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I'm not even sure he qualifies. More than being living, he basically transcends life. seriously.. I don't think he'll ever die. Also.. I am guessing that in 60 years, all the cool kids will dig him. Quote
compose yourself Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Arvo Part.. Who's heard Siluans song? ooooof Quote
Cody Loyd Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 Sam Sadigursky is pretty darn good at what he does... His 'Words Project' albums are really tight jazzy art songs. I really enjoy these. https://www.newamsterdamrecords.com/#Album/Words_Project_II (you can listen by clicking the song titles) Quote
rickmiller Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 My favourite composer is, without a doubt, Howard Goodall. Have you heard his Enchanted Voices. You can hear an excerpt on the Classic FM website. Quote
Max Castillo Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Out of non-incidental music probably John Adams or Arvo Part. Quote
Qmwne235 Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 I second John Adams. Ellen Zwilich is nice, too. I am also now ready to say Harrison Birtwistle and (please don't hurt me) Elliot Carter! (The latter more on the strength of his neoclassical works.) Quote

Guest QcCowboy Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 People, please post more than a name. And post more than a name and an article or conjunction. DISCUSS the topic. Why is this composer your favourite. What has the composer done that merits attention. Right now, some of these posts are bordering on "deletable" for the brevity. Put your verbal skills into action somewhere OTHER than the shoutbox and the off-topic forum. Quote
Qmwne235 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Ok... Going back to my post then: I second John Adams. Ellen Zwilich is nice, too.I am also now ready to say Harrison Birtwistle and (please don't hurt me) Elliot Carter! (The latter more on the strength of his neoclassical works.) Adams - I really like his relatively new post-Klinghoffer language. Very original and very personal. The degree of chromaticism and harmonic complexity allows it to transcend silly stereotypes of minimalistic music. That isn't to say his earlier stuff isn't great, too. Zwilich - I'm no postmodernist, but I like the fusion of different kinds of music in her music (which, I guess, some might say is a demonstrate that there are no "kinds", anyway). It sounds funky. Harrison Birtwistle - Awesome. Is that a good enough reason? Elliot Carter - I'm just beginning to understand him. Well, no, not really, I'm just fooling myself. But his music sounds nice. Personally, I'm more a fan of his earlier, neoclassical works, but his string quartets are genius. Quote
