blm22 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Ok i've been playing tuba for awhile(a few years), I have a range from double pedal D to a Eb above the staff, I just got a Perantucci mouthpiece and it help my tone and duration in the high range but dosn't increase the range, If I got a Eb Tuba for solo's would that make it easier to hit the double high Bb(Bb-4)? maestrowick Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 The mouthpiece won't increase the range. You must create a faster air stream in conjuction with the proper buzz. I would stray from switching tubas unless the composer wants it. Quote
blm22 Posted February 24, 2009 Author Posted February 24, 2009 well for the BBb tuba the notes are fuzzy up there, And the main reason for switching would be for range, Like I'll stick to thee BBb For Symphonic Band but for solo's and ensembles I'll use the Eb Quote
James H. Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Bb4 on a BBb tuba? AHAHAHAHA, yeah right. Personally I'd try to get my hand's on an F tuba just to assist in the accuracy. Notice I didn't say extension of range. Some tuba mouthpieces have a very wide rim/cup width, some have a comparatively small rim. Yes, the smaller one might help you play note or so higher than a big one, but really the range is all up to you and your lips and how you use your air. Don't think of getting new equipment to extend your upper range, think of it as more facilitating it, making it easier than it already is. Whether you can play up there or not has little to do with the instrument and mouthpiece. If you are serious about tuba playing and plan to continue it through college, I would suggest getting yourself an Eb. I'm certainly not going to play the Gregson on my BBb... it's hell for hitting the right partials up there, it's almost as bad as playing (French) horn. Sure I can hit them... but an Eb tuba would make me more accurate every time. █▓▒░Post 1975 - Dmitri Shostakovich composes the Viola Sonata - his final work.░▒▓█ One random fact per post for your enjoyment!
