d.kowlesar Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I have had such a hard time writing new lyrics that I thought I would start this thread as a way to offer help with new techniques that I have learned and also find the help that I need. To date I have written about four songs and lyrics to go with it. It's not always easy but I find that if you write from your own experience that you will most definitely find new and fresh ways of saying what you feel inside yourself. It is the BEST way to start. :w00t: My biggest issue is feeling like everything has already been written! Quote
musicdecomposed Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Well, I've always felt that we all have common emotions and feelings, but that how we experience them is what makes each of us unique. I've filled up a bunch of notebooks with song lyrics, sometimes 4-5 different songs about the exact same experience. I find that looking at an event from a number of different angles helps give me a wider perspective from which to draw out ideas. Other times I feel like an experience gives me too many emotions to put into words. I know this happens a lot, and what I try to do is separate each emotion into its own idea. Sometimes this makes the writing too simplistic, but other times it can give you a deeper understanding of why you feel that way. And I think that "deeper why" is what makes lyrics such a fascinating study and why people will ultimately listen closely to your music (speaking from more of a popular music perspective). Ultimately I think lyric writing, as well as poetry, is a way for the writer to help themselves come to terms with their own emotions, and when they can reach a discovery, the audience may well share in that experience.
