composer01458 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 What's an EXTREMELY loud percussion instrument, maybe a non-conventional instrument like Mahler Box? Does anyone know what "wooden plank" is? Quote
Globutron Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 a Gong, with a microphone aimed at it that's plugged into gigantic speakers Quote
Alexander Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 A meteorite falling on earth. :) The bass drum is pretty loud. So is the tam-tam... perhaps the thundersheet too... and bells. Quote
composer01458 Posted March 29, 2009 Author Posted March 29, 2009 Can you hit a thundersheet with a sledgehammer or would that damage it? What can you hit it with that would be make a "sfffffz" sound Quote
Old Composer Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 It depends on the effect you want. The best thing is a combination of percussion instruments. Timpani+BD+Cymbals can produce a good sfz effect. Brake Drum+Snare Drum Rim Shot can also produce a jolting effect. China Cymbal+Almost Anything can be loud. So can a Tam-Tam/Timpani/BD combo. If I had to guess about wooden plank, I would presume it to be a whip/slapstick. Quote
jujimufu Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 the bigger, the louder (usually). Also, I would imagine a very big woodblock hit with a hammer would make a LOT of loud sound. Otherwise, just mike anything and that should do it :P Quote
abd_zibdeh Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 for a natural sound , without any speakers or mic's , i think its the "derbakeh" it has a pretty high sound especially when doing some advanced techniques in it. Quote
Cody Loyd Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 a brake drum has a really piercing sound. Quote
SYS65 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 The Hammerblow can be really loud depending on the surface you're going to hit it, for instance this big wooden box. Quote
SYS65 Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 The "Brake Drum" is something new to me.... I didn't know that thing.... where can I hear the sound of the Brake drum ?.... is it similar to the Anvil ? As far as I know the Anvil can be any metal piece that produces a Metallic Strike Sound... (the Anvil of the Orchestra in my place is actually a Car Rhine) it doesn't have necessary to look like this: Quote
James H. Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Here's some virtuoso brake drum. I wouldn't watch the whole thing, but skip around, maybe minute by minute. As it goes on it gets slower and slower, so at the end you can here what individual blows sound like. Note that there are computer sounds in this piece as well, you're not hearing just brake drum. Broken Drum - Matthew Burtner The brake drum can be played with a variety of beaters. Usually drumsticks, but vibraphone mallets can be used for more eerie soft effects, brass mallets can be used for very loud harsh, bright accents, and in this case it would appear he's playing it using... triangle beaters? I'm not entirely sure. Quote
Cody Loyd Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Here's some virtuoso brake drum. that is freakin awesome Quote
