Jen318tkd Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 We have been watching the shoutbox since the new code of conduct went into effect and found certain things to be a bit concerning. The main being - cursing in Russian? Come on people, really? Why would you stoop so low to get around the rules? The shoutbox is dead. Quote
Guest QcCowboy Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 it's a shame we were pushed to take this decision by inconsiderate members whose only concern was their own "freedom of speech". Maybe some day, the shoutbox decision will be reversed, and YC members will once again have access to it. In the meantime, all we can do is hope that this will serve as a lesson and a wake-up call. JairCrawford Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Wow... how often was this happening? (The cursing in Russian?) Quote
Matthew Becker Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 The irony is that the swearing was in Russian... Looks like nobody's rushing to the chat room right away. Quote
Guest Bitterduck Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Merely an excuse. This would've happen regardless. Quote
Flint Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I actually got written up at work (just a warning, this time, luckily...) when IT reported that part of this site (the shoutbox...) was triggering the web filter today. :( Quote

That's kindof funny....but, goes to show the sad state-of-affairs forcing us to take such drastic action. Quote
Nirvana69 Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Welps, I'd say that YC just shot itself in the head to get rid of a mild headache. EDIT: Oh, I see what you guys did there... clever. Quote
jawoodruff Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Isn't there a way to put in a filter for the cursing? Or just punish those who curse excessively? One thing I liked about this site was that the shoutbox provided a nice opportunity for composers and musicians to talk in a comfy environment - far different than posting a post and waiting for a reply. Quote
Max Castillo Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Yeah how sad, I'll totally miss the shoutbox. :( The fact that this happened on April 1st totally doesn't have anything to do with it. Let's cry together. Quote
Tokkemon Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 It's gone?! :sadtears: How will I not pay attention in class now? Quote
Ferkungamabooboo Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Heck, I wouldn't know a Russian curse if it bit me. I do know that the "ultimate" Polish curse translates to "May a duck rise up and kick you..." Not so offensive in my book. Also, isn't switching languages a common bowdlerization? On the other hand, /me is unsurprised, especially at flint's plight. I often had to navigate away from NSFW convos in the shoutbox, and I would come back from an errand to see NSFW stuff on the shoutbox for all to see... Nice job kids. PS: It'd be nice if the Archive was easily accessible. I want to stress that I'm not pointing fingers or whatever, but it seems kind of fishy that none of us who weren't on at obscure US times are able to see even a censored version of what went down... What's going to be done with the chatroom, as well? That has a very similar level of possibility of abuse, and it seems silly to keep it if what was the de facto chatroom was deemed too vulgar. Quote
Guest Bitterduck Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 There was a nice little solution to the NSFW shoutbox...HIDE IT WHEN YOU ARE AT WORK. There was a little button for it. p.s. Hey doesn't this prove that the chatroom sucks and that it just wasn't the shoutbox holding it back? Quote
Globutron Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Why aren't people just migrating to the chat area? Sure it's blue rather than brown but... Quote
Guest Bitterduck Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Maybe because it's in an awkward place. I've had to tell people where to click a few times already -_-. Secondly, it doesn't have the same effect as the shoutbox. You can't open the chatroom, post something, go eat, come back and see what people said. Quote
Globutron Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Yeah but its better than adding everyone on MSN or 'Aim', whatever that is. Quote
Guest Bitterduck Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 maybe. I don't really care. I idle in the chatroom randomly anyways, but no one talks. Quote
Mathieux Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Yeah but its better than adding everyone on MSN or 'Aim', whatever that is. AIM = America [online] Instant Messanger used for America Online (AOL) but it sucks. Quote

Please tell me you're being sarcastic. But you sound so serious... Quote
JairCrawford Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Hmm... you know... this is very interesting. (*Notes the particular date and remembers similar events occurring on the same day of last year...*) ;) Quote
Berlioz Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Phew. For a moment I thought I had been banned from the shoutbox for calling someone a peace treaty. xD Quote
