musicman02 Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Does anyone know of a good series of books for a violinist? Not really instructional books, but music books. Preferably a series, so I can keep at it, and so that there will be a book I can just jump in and start. Or perhaps an individual book, without a series. Any books are good:). Quote
sum1 Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I recommend Ivan Galamian's Principles of Playing & Teaching the Violin. An expensive volume, but one well worth it. It not only explains the technique needed to play the violin, giving etudes and excercises to develop these techniques, but the mechanics behind the violin itself. An absolutely amazing book to improve your playing, especially with the fundamentals, which many people struggle with at times (darn blasted bow control. :sadtears:). There's a wonderful chapter on how to make the most of your practice time too. No substitute for an actual teacher, but a great reference. The Suzuki series is a decent set of music, though you might be past those already. You could also (depending on your level) get the Six Sonatas and Partitas by Bach. Look for the Galamian edition, as it has some cool printings of the original Bach manuscripts. I can't really recommend much without knowing what music you can and can't play. Quote
