beautifulnoise Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 hi everyone, i would like to start a solo piano monthly competition. here's how it will work: I will select a style or form of music (fantasia, sonata, concerto, mazurka...etc.) then, each contestant will write a piece of music that fits that style. the submissions will be awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or one of two honorable mentions. The first three people who ask to be judges for that month will be awarded that position. The judges will be looking for pieces that fit the required form, are creative, and show evidence of careful thought and editing. If anyone is interested, we could make the winning pieces (1, 2, 3, and the two honorable mentions) into the YC fantasias, sonatas, waltzes...etc. THE FIRST COMPETION WILL BE FANTASIAS (FANTASYS) AND WILL BE FOR THE MONTH OF MAY. ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE SENT TO MY EMAIL aspiringcomposer13@gmail.com BY MIDNIGHT CT ON MAY 31. NO EXCEPTIONS! happy composing and good luck  micah
James H. Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 In one night? You're kidding, right? Give over a week. Make it April/May.
blackballoons Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 A one month sonata sounds tough...sonatina is within reason, for me at least. Fantasias sound do-able. I may join for a later month. But please, I'd love to judge for May.
OmarSanchez Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 length? accmp. for the pno.soloist? specific style of fantasy? difficulty? what do you want submitted? midi,mp3, mus, pdf?
James H. Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 may 31 is not 1 night. I could have swore that read April 31st... I'm deaf and now I guess I'm going blind too.
almacg Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 Are fantasias typically quite virtuosic? I'm not sure if I'm a good enough pianist to take part if that's the case, so can the fantasia be fairly easy to play?
James H. Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 All a fantasia really is is a free-form composition, or at least a composition with a form determined by the composer and not any preset strict form like a sonata or whatnot. One classic characteristic of a fantasia is an alternation between quick and slow material, but that's not requirement for the form. The fantasia developed as sort of an improvisatory style. It doesn't need to be easy or difficult to play.

siwi Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 OK, I'm in as I've rather neglected the solo piano in my output. Any guidelines on time limits? Also what do you want submitted? Pdf might be best - would you accept a scanned hand-written score?
KDMAnderson Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Yes, I'm curious if you're looking for a score or an audio file in this competition. I'd love to submit a piece, time permitting.
beautifulnoise Posted May 10, 2009 Author Posted May 10, 2009 score required: (pdf, mus., or handwritten) audio required: (performance [preffered], mp3, or midi) no required length or performance level.
blm22 Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I'll join, fantasia?, hmm I might make an atonal fantasia, or something in a minor key.
ChemicalReaper Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Would you accept harpsichord, or is it strictly piano only? (I <3 Harpsichord.)
beautifulnoise Posted May 24, 2009 Author Posted May 24, 2009 i would prefer that it is for piano. this is meant to be a piano competition, afterall. however, i suppose if you really want to you can use any kind of solo keyboard.
False Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 do we have to turn in the composition before may 31 or ON may 31? I dont get wat u mean...

Alright, piano it will be. (I'm going out of my comfort zone and trying something jazzy instead of classical.)
