composerorganist Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Hello All - I have at my resource the Sam Adler orchestration book to get the basics of brass and the orchestration classes here at YC. I"d like to study scores also. So can you recommend excellent chamber music for brass or even an orchestral movement for brass that features idiomatic and well-crafted writing. Stylistically something post WW II is preferable but would love any pre-WWI literature that is considered excellent examples too Also, definitely open to good jazz literature IF you know there is a score of the arrangement or orchestration I could get from the library. Thanks all! Quote
Gavin Gorrick Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Well the majority of chamber music for brass is going to be from the 20th century, so no need to worry about that I guess two works to start with would be... Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra - If you aren't already familiar with it (You probably are but whatever) dissect that first movement and the brass fugue near the end Also, Elliott Carter's Brass Quintet is pretty good. I'll post more as I can remember anything helpful Quote
Daniel Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 Derek Bourgeois's Brass Quintet is worth looking at (as is *all* of his brass music....there is a lot of it). YouTube - Derek Bourgeois Brass Quintet part 1 Another great piece by the same guy is Concerto Grosso. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGRSvUNCe_U Not great quality there..you lose most of the sound. But put it on High Quality anyway. Quote
composerorganist Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 Wow guys thanks for the quick response. Looks like I'll have a full plate for score study this summer! Quote
Gardener Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 For horn: Ligeti, Hamburg concerto! (His Horn trio too.) (Grisey's Epilogue out of Les Espaces Acoustiques is pretty cool too) Quote
robinjessome Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 ...recommend excellent chamber music for brass ... open to good jazz literature IF you know there is a score of the arrangement or orchestration I could get from the library. The score bit makes me sad, because I don't expect much jazzish brass writing is commercially available... but, for your listening pleasure: There's three records I would recommend you check out. Kenny Wheeler - A Long Time Ago - Gnu Suite Florian Ross Brass Project - Lilacs and Laughter - Opening Chorale John Surman w/ London Brass - Free And Equal - Fire Quote
composerorganist Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 it is OK robin. I was just hoping you'd know of examples with scores available. But I'll listen --- I just haven't developed very good dictation skills. OMG - Just listened to the the Florian Ross piece - my god it is gorgeous stuff - a gorgeous combo of Stravinsky and Coltrane - love those "off" roots - 11ths or 13ths in bass once in awhile???) gardener - I have the recording of Hamburg and think it is quite lovely - especially with its spartan textures (reminds too a little of Feldman's concertos). Just getting into Grisey - I find what i have heard quite beautiful. BTW - Depending on how many more responses received I think I'll put a sticky on this for everyone interested in writing for brass. Quote
YC26 Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Paganini Variations for Brass Quintet- Lutoslawski... Hmmm.. and his 2nd or 3rd symphony.. Scores for the symphonies though are like $80 dollars.. but you probably have access to a good library. Quote
