Mathieux Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 I once saw a chart type thing that gave a sort of discription to the tone and "color" of every major and minor key. I'm curious if anyone has this (since I lost it) and also if there is one about EVERY key, like C mixolydian and D phrygian etc. Also, how would you label keys in your own words? You wouldn't have to list all of them, just ones you want. I would say this: C major- the purest key, free of all flaws, a happy, joyful, playful key. Db Major- very big and robust and beautiful (i.e. Un Sospiro (Liszt) and many things such as Clair de Lune by Debussy) a key that can be sort of two-faced, beautiful and gorgeous one moment, then the next moment ugly and very dissonant. Eb Major- very fanfare-ish, like the king coming into town, or maybe santa coming to town. Very happy C# Minor- a dark, gloomy character. One that is longing for happiness but can't seem to find it. what about ya'll?
YC26 Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 I don't think the colors actually... uh.. mean anything.
Mathieux Posted May 16, 2009 Author Posted May 16, 2009 well i used that for the lack of a better word :P
Ferkungamabooboo Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 As to specific colors being used to represent pitches: http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/synesthesia-17317-4.html#post264093 There's a whole metric poo-ton of threads on synesthesia. Also, I think we're well past the "requisite" affects of each key -- if it works for you, bully! But it's a terribly personal system, and I'd say limiting when you're composing, since it ignores more psychoacoustically important factors. The whole concept of "the blues " turns much of the affect of a key on its head, with its subversion of happy and sad.
Gavin Gorrick Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 This is absurd, all major keys are the same, all minor keys are the same
Flint Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 Use the Search function and continue this discussion in one of the other umpteen Synaethesia threads.
