Imitating electric guitar

Any ideas on an orchestral instrumentation to imitate the sound of an electric guitar?

What do you mean by electric guitar? Like lead guitar? Perhaps a song with the sound you are looking for might help.

Plucked and bowed string simultaneously + some woods for an edge to the sound?

Just brainstorming.

I've been fooled at one point or another by:

• unison bowed violin, trumpet in cup mute
  
• unison trombone and soprano sax
  

What Robin said, but think about mixing in some high oboe.
