False Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Hey, I wonder if its alright if we have like "real" competitions in YC? For example, one user submitts a recording/video of a piece he/she played and same with another user, and we get the judges to grade that which one is better in style, techique, etc. Just like a live piano competition or something.... Or do we have that function in YC? Quote
James H. Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 No, we don't have something like that. It's really a composer forum, not a "I can play my instrument better than you" forum. These fun ideas are usually frowned upon. Usually for good reason - somebody could get competitive and arrogant about it and parade around the forum like he's an authority when he really isn't. Of course, the same thing could occur with composition "contests" as well. Actually, I'm rather for the idea. As composers, we should be able musicians as well. Master musicians on our instrument of choice. A person really learns about how music is written when he plays it himself and therefore I feel musicianship play a vital role to somebody who really wants to understand music enough to write his own. That said - not many people really want to "compete" against each other. What are we trying to prove? I think we can IMprove ourselves by listening to each other, and can welcome critiques from more experienced players. We don't really need competitions for that. They only thing is... I just don't think there is a large enough group of people interested in this that actually have the means to record themselves. Aside from this doubt, I'm actually all for the idea. Quote
Mike Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 This might be a nice idea once we gain support for the uploading of videos. Coming soon...although that has been said before. :P Quote

I thought of the idea while looking through the competition page.... Anyway thanks for considering my idea as well. Quote
YC26 Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 This is a bad idea because you can't compare my amazing playing to a bando's. Quote
James H. Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 I'm sorry that I and a lot of other people were brought up in a school district that didn't have a senior high orchestra or string ensemble. I'm sorry that I got a violin, joined a community youth orchestra, and actually tried. Oh well. Quote
