Maximilian Caldwell Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Of the major Classical and Romantic Requiem Masses, who wrote your favorite? I've declined to go into the 20th/21st centuries, because it's unclear where normal requiems end, and crazy stuff begins. And I know there will be someone determined to berate me for not including every outlandish thing in my poll if I open that can of worms. Quote
Voce Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Liszt wrote a "Requiem for Unaccompanied Organ" that I'm quite fond of. When it comes to more "conventional" approaches, Dvoř Quote
Gardener Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 I don't know all of those, so I can't give a definite answer to that, but I'm in deep love with the Brahms requiem. Maybe it's because it's not all so clich Quote
SYS65 Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 I like the Brahms one, but in strict terms is isn't a requiem, so I say that Mozart is the best for me.... (that's the only mozart work I like, is the only work that I consider he's not playing games and remains serious) Quote
Xeno Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 I absolutely LOVE the Mozart and Verdi Requiems. Especially the Dies Irae and Lacrimosa in the Mozart and the Dies Irae in the Verdi (the bass drum sounds like a cannon in the Verdi Dies Irae and it is AWESOME). I actually downloaded both Dies Iraes from iTunes and compared/contrasted them and decided I love them both. I'm surprised by how many composers wrote Requiems that I never really knew about... *rushes off to listen to half of the Requiems from the list* Quote
MaestroMarvel Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Mine... Joking... I voted for Verdi. Visit my http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/auditioning-sweeney-todd-20506.html Thread in Repertoire! Recommend Tenor Voice Audition Songs "Glad as always to oblige my friends and neighbors." Quote
Morivou Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 In all honesty, mine is the Rutter. Don't ask me why, it's sentimental. Quote
Zepoha Heampe Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Mozart: Used on everywhere too much, so it isn't interesting any more. Dvorak: Very pretty. But only pretty. There are many Requiems more interesting than Dvorak's. Berlioz: I hate this one. This Requiem is too cold, like Berlioz's other works. I can listen only Fantastic Symphony. Brahms: A polite Requiem. But I think, it hasn't got energy. These Requiems were written for art, not for church. Faur Quote
