so when you're saying we can use ANY octotonic scale, are you saying we can make one up? or just a variation of the diminished, starting at different points? just trying to clarify...:)

Submit here, Bachian.

By the way, I really hope everyone is still doing this...I wish these competitions were bigger

Sorry if this seems a stupid question - but could you tell me what an octotonic scale is?

(I have looked in my music dictionary but this term is not in there.)

Look here.

For this competition, however, it is my understanding that any collection of 8 pitches may be used.

C, D, D-sharp, E, F, F-sharp, G, A-sharp, C, for example would be acceptable.

I'd also assume that, since any 8 tone collection is allowed for this competition, an 8-tone row would also be acceptable (though I'd need conformation on that), as would a piece in 8-tone equal temperament, or even an 8 pitch collection that doesn't confine itself to the octave, for example, a pitch collection that spans an octave and a 5th, such as:

C, D-sharp, F, G-sharp, B, C-sharp, E, G

Or

C, D (+37.5 cents), F (-an eight-tone), G (+12.5 cents), A (+a quarter-tone), C (-12.5 cents), D (+ an eight tone), F (-37.5 cents) (though if you kept going with this one, you'd actually end up with more than 8 pitches :iffy:)

Just to give you some ideas. ;)

I'm going to download that and try to play it.

It's very playable. I can play the majority of my piano pieces, which means they are very playable, as I'm not a great performer.

Don't worry jimmyjuicin, that is why pablofm is not a judge but a contestant. You'll be judged fairly. After the competition is over, I would suggest posting it in a chamber/piano thread to get advice. (I haven't listened to it yet so I won't post about it).
