M_is_D Posted April 17, 2006 Author Posted April 17, 2006 OOOPS I was in a hurry and didn't add the poll! XD Quote
Guest cavatina Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Please, no one vote for "La Fanciulla del West"... not exactly the man's greatest work!!!!! ;) Just kidddinggggggg. But seriously, I have heard accusations that Puccini was more of a businessman than a composer, and that for him composition was more a job then a passion. I find that hard to believe. Firstly, there is no evidence for this. But more importantly, hearing an aria such as Tosca's "E lucevan le stelle" should debunk this quite quickly. You need passion to write such music. Anyway, little summary on my view's of the man: Puccini = Greatest Operatic Composer; had passion; wrote masterpieces everytime. Quote

He did all those mushy and sentimental heroic arias to leave people chilling and all, but he was really an evil wizard :D jk Quote
Daniel Alley Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 OMG - I'm the only one who voted for Tosca. :D :) Makes me want to jump of a building, screaming, O Scarpia, avanti a Dio! I mean it really does. Tosca is not only my fav Puccini opera, but my FAVORITE opera. ;) Its so great, the first four notes, the man is a genuis to make a theme out of those notes. This opera is the best. I mean seriously. 1900!!! Quote

Daniel Alley Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 1900 is when the work premiered, in Rome too ;) . It was written when Puccini was on the top of his game, written right after boheme, and right before butterfly. Since it premiered on Jan 14, 1900, it is the first great piece of art of the twentieth century. And i hate Vissi d'arte :glare: Although Butterfly second on my list, and then Boheme, then Turandot. And I've never had an oppurtunity to see or listen to the whole of the The girl of the golden west. :( Quote

And the 20th century only started in 1901. Quote
