Morivou Posted August 11, 2009 Author Posted August 11, 2009 I think your first melody was wonderful! 5/4 was a GREAT choice. It's different, yet it has a melodic, flowing feel to it. Bold! i like it. Your second melody is also very good! NEXT ASSIGNMENT... Write accompaniment for SOLO PIANO (which you can think of as an orchestra reduction if you want...) for both melodies. What will be hard: You must write a transition from your firs tot second melody so it flows as ONE PIECE. In other words, your two melodies become two contrasting sections in a piece, with the accompaniment holding them together. See what I mean?

Now let's see how the piano accompaniment goes...:P

Morivou Posted August 12, 2009 Author Posted August 12, 2009 Ok! Your accompaniment was wonderful! Good job. NOW... time to move up the scale. Find a poem you like, any kind... and write a DUET for any two voices and piano reduction accompaniment using that text. DO NOT write (the text) it yourself. Parameters: 1. Must be OVER 2 minutes long. 2. Must consist of at least two contrasting sections. 3. The Voices must EACH have: Solos, Unison lines, Harmonic lines, and Polyphonic lines. 4. You must modulate at LEAST once. Bonus: 1. Use a style you aren't familiar with... a.k.a. - Jazz, Atonalism... etc. (idk what you aren't comfortable with... just go for whatever you don't normally do).

You didn't read all of my instructions. Where's the poem you set? And, also, the 2nd voice didn't have any solo time. My second comment... WAS that 12 tone? Or just atonal? My third comment... for the "sound-scape" I loved it. You are doing well. BUT, I want you to FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. SOOOOO... For the next assignment: FIND A POEM TO SET. Make it completely TONAL (in harmonic structure... meaning you could tell me if it's a I-V-IV-V-I progression of whatever). Make use of smart counterpoint. Put in the LYRICS. I wanna see how you do on lyric placement. It should be for DUET voices.

HeckelphoneNYC Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 Can I use the poem I like and put it into Icelandic? :P And I'll put the actual words in english in my post ;) I hope yes, Heckel (These lessons are fun, by the way!!!)

Actually, I know orchestration (for orchestra), that was just a first attempt at poem song writing :P Maybe I'll need them at some point :)
Morivou Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 Actually, I know orchestration (for orchestra), that was just a first attempt at poem song writing :P Maybe I'll need them at some point :) You DO need training in counterpoint, which we will get to, though. You should read up on it. Fux's Counterpoint is a good start (but Schoenberg's is better, imho).
