Daniel Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 OK, so here is my new website. http://www.danielbarkleymusic.com/ Yes, it's on Google Pages, but I'll eventually get round to making a proper one. For the moment, however, there is a problem: The site header disappears when you go through the http://www.danielbarkleymusic.com/ redirect. It should read Home (Daniel Barkley Music), but instead you either get nothing or just the URL as the header. Any ideas on how to fix this? Other thoughts on the site are welcome. :) Thanks Quote
robinjessome Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I like the background, and the design looks clean and easy to navigate ... For your dilemma though, it must be something associated with referring to the googlepages... When you go straight to Home (Daniel Barkley Music) it works fine... though, there's a lot of weird nonsense code from google in your source... Because your I expect, once you get your own hosting space and purge the code of the googley nonsense, it'll work fine. [edit] Also, your referring www.danielbarkleymusic.com seems to be done in Frames. Perhaps that's the underlying issue - browser can't see through the frame set. :dunno: Quote
Gardener Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 Yeah. Google seems to put your site Home (Daniel Barkley Music) into a frame of a "parent" site, which really does nothing but display said frame. Check out the source code when you open www.danielbarkleymusic.com directly. If Google lets you edit -this- page, then it's as simple as adding a title tag to it. If it doesn't let you, then that's just a problem about Google Pages in general. Quote
Daniel Posted August 17, 2009 Author Posted August 17, 2009 Thanks guys. It looks like I can't edit it though (typical Google). What should my next step be, in terms of hosting / web-design in general? Glad you find it clean, Robin. That was one of my goals... though it might come at the expense that the site looks a tad drab. Quote
robinjessome Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 What should my next step be, in terms of hosting / web-design in general? Dunno really about the design - you could find something more interesting and engaging. ... I like digging through Download free CSS templates - Free CSS Templates or Free CSS | Free CSS Templates, Open Source CSS Templates and CC CSS Templates for templates and design ideas.... ... For hosting though, find something that give enough space and bandwidth... I have a basic plan from: Canadian Web Hosting - Web Hosting Canada all in Canadian dollars - Plus Canada Domain Hosting Services ... 500 megabytes of storage, and 10 gigs of bandwidth. WAY more than enough for me, for about $4 (Canadian) a month. CHEAP. I expect there's a similar company for Europe/UK/Ireland ... for relatively affordable hosting/domain registration.... Hosting, Irish Web Hosting from Ireland's hosting provider, Host.ie have a combo - about €100 for a year's worth of basic hosting + domain registration. :hmmm: Quote
Gardener Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I think that's already a bit on the expensive side. My host (in Switzerland) costs about 60€ a year, inclusive everything (hosting, domain, VAT), and I have 10 GB storage space and unlimited bandwidth (of course Switzerland has a much lower VAT than Ireland, so that makes a bit of a difference). Of course I don't actually need 10GB for my website, but I like putting some other large, uncompressed audio files there to share with specific people, without actually putting them officially on the website, and some of these are larger than a GB. (I actually have one electronic piece of myself sitting on my harddisk that takes about 2 GB on its own…) Quote
Daniel Posted August 17, 2009 Author Posted August 17, 2009 I like your Canadian host, Robin! I wonder can I use it from here. Yea, the Host.ie site is not very cheap. What is your host, Gardener? Quote
Gardener Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 KreativMedia GmbH - Hosting, Webhosting, Webspace, Sitebuilder, Server, VPS. But I'm not sure how viable it is for people from other countries. They don't even seem to have an English version of their website. Quote
robinjessome Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 I like your Canadian host, Robin! I wonder can I use it from here.Yea, the Host.ie site is not very cheap. Oh. Oops! I can't tell sometimes. :P I expect the canadian one is totally usable for you... I don't know how this factors into internet use, but I think their servers are based in Vancouver (like, the complete opposite site of the world for you). There MUST be hundreds of these companies around though, I'm sure you'll find something. ... :whistling: Quote
